The group list does not appear to show all the groups. One has to tab between the sorting options and hope that the desired group will show up in the top groups in the list. There should be a way to scroll through to see all groups.

    • This should work.
      https://www.ratburger.org/groups/

One can access all the groups from the “Menu” then “All Groups”.

    • The Groups widget at the right only shows the eight most recently active public groups. (Private and hidden groups do not appear there.) It is like “Recent Posts” and “Recent Comments”—a pointer to current activity, not a comprehensive list of groups.

You can see all public groups by using the menu at the top right and selecting Groups/All Groups. This will show a list of all public groups broken into pages. (We don’t currently have more than one page of public groups.) You can sort the list of groups in a variety of ways.

The Groups/My Groups item in that menu will show all…[Read more]

I got a notification that “commented on Mein Gott! The MSM!”(lacking a username). But also note:
    1) clicking on the link took me to the post and there was no comment.
    2) I had not commented on or liked that post.
    3) in my notifications tab, the “read” notification says: “commented on “ctlaw”” and the link is to https://www.ratburger.org/comment-page-740/#comment-18797

    • There have been some perturbations in the Force tonight as I tried to sort out the persistent problem of legitimate users having their comments deemed as spam and being required to fill out a CAPTCHA. This may be responsible for the odd notification.

The drop down menu from the notification blue bubble was in Italics.

Okay now. I wonder what happened.

    • It was on my iPad. I took a screen shot. It is in my draft folder.

    • It’s probably an unclosed italics tag in the post you were viewing at the time. This can cause the rest of the site below the tag to turn into italics. This last happened on an EThompson page last Saturday. I haven’t seen it happen today.

    • Update: it’s in TKC’s post. When you display that post, it turns the rest of the site to italics. I’ll fix it.

    • Uhhh…you appear to be editing that post right now. I’ll let you fix it to avoid stepping on your edits. If you can’t find the problem, exit the edit and let me know and I’ll go looking for it.

    • I let you do it. I looked at the Visual and it looked okay. It needs to be checked in Text.

    • It’s fixed now. The formatting in that post was a pile of horseshit. I’ll bet it was pasted in from a word processor and that Microsoft was in the loop somewhere. In addition to a rogue unclosed {em} tag at the end of the paragraph in bold, there were a number of 4000×3000 pixel images inserted full size which blew into the left margin of the page. I resized all of the images to 640×480. I also fixed some eccentric spacing within and between paragraphs.

Given how much crap WordPress allows you slip in when pasting text from a word processor, it’s a wonder we haven’t see a…[Read more]

Is it me and my computer (10pm Eastern, 8/1) but Ratburger is slower than dial up? Are we being attacked?

The “Quote” function is not working on the comments on this post.

I saw a post by Hypatia. I wanted to send her a private message. When I click on her name, it takes me to her “posts” page, but that page does not have a way to click to her home page. So, I tried clicking her name at some of her other posts, with the result of getting back to her posts page several times. When I clicked her name at a comment she had made, then that took me through to her home page and I was able to send the message.
I suppose that if a member only posted but never commented, then I would not ever be able to send them a private message.

    • Something like this has happened before. The user is deleted.

    • At present, we have no protection against a user who completes the registration process and sends spam. I saw the user registration, checked the E-mail address and found it to be a known spammer, and before I could delete the user the spam had already been sent an 10 Cents had deleted the user.

We may have to install something like the “New User Approve” plug-in (https://wordpress.org/plugins/new-user-approve/), which requires administrators to approve all new user registrations if stuff like this keeps on happening.

I went to send a PM. I clicked on “Send” and the system was hanging. And did not finish the operation to tell me the message was sent. Later I got a 504, “Gateway Timeout
The gateway did not receive a timely response from the upstream server or application.”

I checked my sent folder and it appears the message was sent.

    I was using a desktop/Windows 7/Brave at the time.

    • I have a log item:

      [Thu Jul 12 20:57:16.362157 2018] [proxy_fcgi:error] [pid 22714:tid 140509331068672] (70007)The timeout specified has expired: [client 220.14.234.25:50033] AH01075: Error dispatching request to : (polling), referer: https://www.ratburger.org/members/10cents/messages/compose/

which I believe is your IP address. This information provides no indication of why the timeout occurred. I am still investigating this. There will be details in the Updates post in about 45 minutes. I may try increasing the number of PHP servers to see if it helps, but I still do not…[Read more]

    • Oh, I had John put that in as a feature just for you.

    • I didn’t see your comment on the Wish List, Bryan.

    • I sent a PM. There was a big lag before I got confirmation that it was sent. I opened another tab and checked my Sent Box. The PM was sent. About 15 seconds later the confirmation “Your message was successfully sent.” came through.

Rcvd a message from another member that was not noted on my “greetings” alert. Only happened to find it because I was writing a message of my own.
    Any update here?

    • Please check the list of your read notifications to see if it was sent and marked as read. In the drop down menu from your avatar in the upper right hand corner go to “Notifications” then “Read”. The server was rebooted earlier so that might be a factor.
How long ago was the message sent?

    • I have the following item in the server error_log:

      [Wed Jul 11 16:04:52.058534 2018] [proxy_fcgi:error] [pid 17906] (70007)The timeout specified has expired: [client 71.208.119.15:64079] AH01075: Error dispatching request to : (polling), referer: https://www.ratburger.org/members/ethompson/messages/view/269/

I have no idea what this means, but it sure looks like something that could have caused a notification for a message to have been lost. I will have to research this further to understand what is going on. I have seen four messages like this in the last three hours. (This was…[Read more]

What is an “error http 500” ?

    • Starting at 02:04 UTC in 2018-07-11, we started to get “out of memory” errors from the PHP subsystem under which WordPress runs. These were initially rare but became more common as time passed. When the PHP engine crashes, the user gets an HTTP 500 status which says “server failed”. (This message can result from anything which causes the server process to crash.) At 11:20 UTC I rebooted the server and there have been none of these errors since, and memory usage is running around 50%.

I am currently investigating this and will report on what I find in tonight’s midnight post in…[Read more]

I attempted in my “White Supremacist” OP to go ahead and edit the comments I recently made to Phil Turmel. But when I hit edit, and then made the needed changes, I would hit “update” to be told I could not access that page. What? Why not?

    • I do not know what is going on here. You received a 403 error, which is what usually happens when, for example, a user attempts to edit a comment by another user. If I, say, try to edit your comment, that’s the error I get. You can also get a 403 if there is a synchronisation error between the front-end (user interface) and back-end (database operations).

I tried editing one of my own comments and had no problems. I also edited your comment as an administrator (making no changes) and it worked OK. Yours were the only 403 errors in the last 30,000 log entries.

      Do you remember…[Read more]

I was making a comment from my home computer, I was asked to submit my email in order to request access and solve a captcha, saying that I was not allowed on the blog

    • This will happen from time to time. In this case, your request originated from an IP address (69.211.50.40) which had been flagged in one of the spam databases that our spam filter consults as a spammer. IP addresses aren’t a particularly good tool for spam filtering, since many people have “floating” IP addresses which change every time they connect to the network. If you happen to draw an IP address that has been flagged, you’ll get the CAPCHA request.

When I send a private message, why do I see it displayed twice ?

  • MJBubba posted an update in the group Group logo of Bug ReportsBug Reports 1 month, 3 weeks ago

So now it is italics that are boogered up. My comment at Ms. EThompson’s “Trump Does it His Way” post appears in italics. I went to edit my comment and I turned italics on, but that did not make a difference. The part I made italics and the part I did not make italics both appear in italics.

    • The main post ended with a passage in italics which had no closing italics tag. This probably happened because the author of the post pasted in text from another window or application which didn’t include the end of the italic passage and WordPress’s brain dead handling of quoting didn’t close the italic tag. Consequently, every comment thereafter began in italic mode.

I have inveighed here far too many times about how dismaying it is that the software which runs around 1/3 of Web sites is so incompetently designed that a simple cut and paste from another site can destroy a main…[Read more]

So I went back in Larry Koler’s history to reach a topic he had up with a Jordan Peterson video. (Posted on May 31st ’18) And then there didn’t seem to be a way to comment, or to read comments. Enough people posted that there must have been comments? How do I go back to read something and maintain the ability to add comment? It is always easy to add comments when a topic is new, but apparently older topics present difficulties?

  • TempTime posted an update in the group Group logo of Bug ReportsBug Reports 2 months, 2 weeks ago

Off topic request. I don’t have a bug to report, but I have a question. I have repeatedly received http error 500 when trying to go to r>. What does this mean? Thanks.

    • By “r>” do you mean Ricochet or Ratburger? I have heard no reports of 500 errors here. HTTP error 500 is an internal server error and usually indicates one of the programs which make up the site’s Web application terminated in error.

    • Sorry, If I confused. I have not no problems at Ratburger. The error pop up earlier today when I was attempting to go to Ricochet. That said, I am able to connect just fine currently. Although it appears there is next-to-no, well, ok , ‘very little’ activity over there right now. Thanks for telling me what the code means. I tried to look it up (google) but the information I found made no sense to me.

My group “Christian Stuff” has disappeared from the listing of groups.
It appears to be functioning normally once I navigate to it via ‘my groups.’

    • Now it appears. I suppose that is because I just posted an update there.

    • The Groups widget in the side bar shows eight groups ranked by the criterion selected at the top, with the most recently active the default. My guess is that “Christian stuff” was not within the eight most recently active until you made a post. Now it shows up as the second in the list for me.

The Avatar/Groups/Membership menu item is the best way to find the groups of which you’re a member.

I would love a way to stay on the page I want in my archives. right now, a user has the ability to be on page one of the archives, newest to oldest, or page one of oldest to newest. But when you want to deal with anything that is “in” more than three pages from either of those parameters, you’ re booted out if you use the page. So maybe I wanna view topic X, which resides on Page Three of Oldest to newest. But first I select delete items I want deleted from Page Three in from oldest to newest. I arrive back out on Page One of Newest to Oldest and have to click four different places to…[Read more]
