Bug Reports

I cannot comment on the most recent private post. Is this a feature or a bug?

    • EDIT: RESOLVED.

    • This is another mystery to defuddle. Yes, what appeared to happen is that the user de-selected TinyMCE comment field (it was unchecked when I edited the post as Administrator). I have no idea why that was done. But that is not supposed to close comments on the post, just disable the fancy TinyMCE editor for comments, as opposed to idiot built-in WordPress comment editor.

However, unchecking that box and saving the post marked the post closed for comments. Checking the box and updating the post does not re-enable comments, even though the box now shows as checked. Neither does…[Read more]

    I am getting “Error 500” a lot.
I tried a restart. I switched from Chrome to Brave.
    Still crashing.
    No difficulties on other sites.

    • Now taking only 10 seconds or so to load. Was brutal late morning and early afternoon. Occasionally would time out before the menu bar could load

    • There is some kind of bizarre out of memory problem that I haven’t seen before. It appears to have started at 19:23:40 UTC. I am investigating it now.

    • From the investigation so far, it appears we are hitting the internal (self-enforced) limit on memory allocation for PHP-FPM worker processes. We last ran into this on 2019-07-24, when I increased the default maximum allocation from 128 Mb to 256 Mb. The messages in the log appear to indicate we are now hitting that limit, which causes 500 errors. (I don’t know if it can cause slow response.)

I increased the maximum to 512 Mb. Since I did this, I haven’t seen a 500 error (but that’s just a few minutes so far). We’ll see.

    • This appears to be a combination of increased load on the site running into a memory limit configured in the server and/or an attack consuming resources which ran into the limit. A summary is on tonight’s Updates Group post:

As I note, I lack the tools to identify the cause of these perturbations, so at the moment, I’m mostly trying things to see what happens. Please let me know if you perceive the problems to have abated or, sadly, stayed the same or gotten worse.

    • John, your fix worked. I got back on the site about an hour and a half ago, and have not encountered the problem since then.
      Thanks a heap. Good work.

    • Had not been on desktop site since late afternoon 1/11. Seems to be running fine this morning. Menu bar populates immediately.

I had problems with Ratburger all day 1/10 using chrome on pc

  • MJBubba posted an update in the group Group logo of Bug ReportsBug Reports 1 week, 4 days ago

Ratburger.org keeps crashing. I think it is just repeatedly timing out, on account of AT&T lies about my level of service. It is Friday night and every account is either streaming a movie or playing a MMG, so our little copper hub is choked.

Unless you see something special, assume the problem is on my end. But it is frustrating.

    Loadibg really really slow

    • I don’t see anything in the system status, access_log, or other indicators which indicates an attack in progress on the site, and I haven’t seen any slow response myself, as I’ve been editing and publishing a post over the last hour. My guess is that it’s just one of those slowdowns which happens on the Internet based on congestion of a point-to-point link, but not at the server end.

(As I’ve noted previously, since the site is hosted at AWS Frankfurt, not locally, I access it, even with my administrator account [which I rarely use], exactly as any other user, so if there’s…[Read more]

Site has been dragging all day for me.

    • I’m sure you’re doing your own troubleshooting, but just as an additional data point — I have seen no slowdown.

    • The site was subjected to an intense log-in storm / denial of service attack (by far the worst in its history) between 2020-01-05 at 23:44:09 and 2020-01-06 at 10:16:27 when I figured out what was going on and firewalled the site in Germany responsible for the attack. During the attack, it was using up around half of the server CPU resources and PHP-FPM worker processes, and could have resulted in slow performance for accesses during that time.

But by the nature of the attack, once I firewalled the incoming traffic from the attacker, its effects on the site should have immediately…[Read more]

I had set my Beaver Swamp post for delayed publishing at 10:39 this morning. What did I do wrong?

    • The post is published, on the main page, and if I view its metadata in the administration page, it shows:

      Published on: Jan 4, 2020 at 10:39

which looks correct. Did you manually publish it after it failed to appear? If not, everything looks OK. I have never tried a scheduled post, so it’s entirely possible something may be wrong with it, but I don’t see anything wrong with this one.

    • I was able to post-publish my A380 post just a day (or three) ago.

    • I have edited the posting time on this post so that it appears at the top of the main page rather than several posts down (based upon the time when it was scheduled to be posted).

    • Yes; I looked for it, and since it was not there I clicked on the “publish” button.
I was assuming that the time was a 24-hour “military” time, since no option was given for am or pm.

      Thanks.

Is it me or Firefox? This is the third time I had noticed this. Someone posts a new post, coincidentally I am online and I wish to comment on this post. There is no (quote) to copy part of the text someone posted unless I refresh or go back to HOME and then go into the post a second time. I can “Like” it, but not quote it.
Is there a timer engaged to make sure the post is actually finished before someone can “quote” it? Or is there a bug?

    • Are you sure you aren’t trying to quote a post when viewing the extract on the main page, rather than the page showing the full post after you’ve clicked the title? The Quote link only appears when the full post is displayed since there’s no comment composition box on the main page into which to paste the highlighted text. I find myself getting confused by that from time to time. If this is what’s happening, you don’t need to refresh the home page: just clicking the title of the post should display it along with a Quote link.

A post is never displayed until the author hits…[Read more]

Several times in the last few days, my notification counter has spontaneously reset to zero.

    • I haven’t seen anything like that. One question: when the counter (I assume you mean the number in the blue circle at the top right of the header bar) goes to zero, if you then go to view Unread Notifications (from, for example, Main Menu/Activity/Notifications), do you see unread notifications, or have they been cleared also?

What I’m trying to figure out is whether the problem is with displaying the number of unread notifications or whether somehow outstanding unread notifications are getting cleared (marked Read), in which case you should see them if you click the Read tab on the…[Read more]

      Marked read.

The intriguing thing here is that it also occurred early this morning when I was only using my iphone to access. Then it occurred just before my post when I had only been using the PC. User error in two different situations seems unlikely, even for me.

    • ctlaw replied 1 month ago

Not sure when. In both cases i noticed it only when going back to an existing ratburger tab from a different non-ratburger tab.

Guys, Ms. EThompson continues to have troubles. She failed at an attempt to include either a photo or a video in a comment.

    ratburger.org/index.php/2019/11/28/hong-kongs-thanksgiving-rallies/#comment-50606

I saw that Dime assisted Hypatia to post her Thanksgiving table picture.
Thanks a heap for keeping this site running so well. Great work on your part, and I am the beneficiary.
    Cheers !

    • What is the problem? I looked at this comment and it includes a picture, albeit one which appeared in the original post. Do you know what is the specific problem she is having?

    • Well then, perhaps the problem is me. I can see the photos and videos in the original post and in comments above. But in the referenced comment by Ms. EThompson, all I see is a very small thumbnail symbol. If I click on it, I get a larger box with the little symbol in the corner.
I left the page up for fifteen minutes, in case my problem was slow internet again, but that is not the problem; other pages load fine.

Funky fonts on posts! Css trouble?

    • It’s because WordPress is a steaming pile of doo-doo, which tries to “sanitise” HTML pasted from other sites by text processing without any comprehension of document structure. The first post on the home page contained an unclosed {code} tag which, undetected by the moronic WordPress code, wrecked the rest of the home page. I have fixed it, so until it happens again, we’re OK.

The most depressing thing of all is that the people who created WordPress are proud of what they have done.

At around 8:40 11/11/2019 the system was slow. It took a long time for the new post page to load.

    • There was absolutely nothing abnormal in the access_log or any system-related messages such as low memory or AWS health checks failing in the half hour surrounding 08:40 UTC. This was probably a transient Internet slow-down between your location and the host which has nothing to do with the site.

Any way to embed a tiktok?
    Here’s an example shared url:
    https://vm.tiktok.com/uPSrmc/

    This works over on blogger.com:

    iframe width=”340″ height=”700″ src=”https://www.tiktok.com/embed/6754261178521849093″ frameborder=”0″ allow=”accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture” allowfullscreen slash-iframe

    • As a WordPress-based site, Ratburger.org only supports embeds of URLs from sites which (1) support the oEmbed protocol and (2) are on a white list of “trusted” embed providers. (The second is required because, the WordPress developers being nincompoops, they blindly copy whatever HTML the embed provider supplies into the page delivered to the user, however harmful. So they require “trust”.)

As far as I can determine, TikTok fails on item (1): they offer no oEmbed server interface. So, it doesn’t matter whether they’re on the white list or not: WordPress will not embed URLs fr…[Read more]

Why is the Argentina post pinned to the top of the page?

    • It wasn’t actually pinned; its publication date was set in the future, which caused it to be “newer” than recent posts. There is nothing in WordPress to keep a Contributor from doing this. I changed the publication date to what I guessed it was supposed to be, and now it appears in order.

I will pass this on to you tech genii, (although I have no idea of the significance of the information) : a few weeks ago I couldn’t get on here , and the problem was idiosyncratic to MY IPad. The reason I posted about it, instead of coming to this group, was that the only screen which would appear, transiently, was the “add new post” page. My husband “cured” my IPad by “erasing my memory and removing all cookies” , as he said. Maybe you get that, and you will be able to help some other hapless neophyte who finds herself locked out..Thanks!

    • Hyp,
If it would help, I’d be happy to pass on name/number of my IT guy who I’ve come to rely upon as much as I do the “cable guy.” He lives in Florida but does business internationally.

He was a techie in the Marine Corps and civilian computers are practically “busy work” for him. 🙂 There is nothing he can’t fix.

    • See my PM for full info if and when you feel you need it. Kevin is super smart and charges $75/hr.

I get “Http Error 500” almost every time I click on a Ratburger link. Then the “Reload” button works.

    • But sometimes I get “Service unavailable” and have to use the back button.

    • This seems to be the mysterious error I wrote about last night on the Updates group. It originally only seemed to be affecting another user, but now it seems to hit you as well. This is related to an out of memory condition in the PHP-FPM module which I do not yet understand. Nothing has changed in the last week which should affect this, but for some reason the errors started to appear at 14:14 yesterday. I restarted PHP-FPM and it made no difference. I just increased the maximum memory size from 128 Mb to 192 Mb and we just got another error at that size.

At this point, I have…[Read more]

    • John,
It is half-past 11:00 am Central Daylight Time, and I just logged in using my work computer on my company network. Everything looks normal. It appears that my problem is a local problem at home. I will look at it tonight.
Thanks a heap. I hope you can get Hypatia sorted out. I thought her problem sounded like a phone issue.
