It’s always wise to start with caution when evaluating what I a may think is a bug, but FWIW:
I added a link using the tool and in the post it’s plain text.
When I click on my email link to a post, it goes to an Oops page.

    • We don’t automatically turn things that look like links into links. If you want to make something a link (even text which is the link itself), highlight the text, then click the link (looks like a link in a chain) icon and enter the URL you wish to link to in the box which pops up. Press the Return button and the link will be created.

      I have…[Read more]

I’m not sure what you mean by this. When I click on the links to posts or comments in notification E-mails I receive they seem to work OK.

Can you describe more precisely where you’re seeing the link that doesn’t work, and copy and paste the URL which resulted in the error…[Read more]

Is there a way to subscribe to the site so I get an email notification whenever a new post (not a comment on a ‘liked’ post) is published?

    • We do not have E-mail notification of new posts, although that is something which might be added. Personally, I find all of these E-mails for comments posted distracting, and I’d prefer using in-band notifications using the site’s alert mechanism, but I haven’t found something satisfactory to do that so far.

You can follow new posts to the site…[Read more]

    • Note that there is also a Twitter feed of new posts, which you can follow at the “Twitter” link under the “Meta” section.

    • Thank you for searching for a way to have in-band alerts. I hope there will be an easy way to do it.

I don’t know if it’s a bug, but I just went to comment on a post & when I hit ‘post’ it took me to a box saying ‘you do not have access to this blog. prove that you are not a robot & I had to enter my email & a note requesting access, then check a “I’m not a robot ‘ box. Which is fine, it’s just that I’ve never had to do that before on RatB.

    • The comment was flagged as spam because it contained the trigger phrase “million dollars”, which is frequently used in spam. Since this is a site where only members can comment, I think we can lighten up on some of the more intrusive spam filtering, but for the moment I’m using the default configuration, because I have many things to do.

      I have…[Read more]

    • oh I see, interesting! thanks for fixing it.

    • I will have to buy another Pencil Blocker from Acme. (Roadrunner reference.)

A smiley in a quote produced this code.
    href=”https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/2.3/svg/1f642.svg” target=”_blank” rel=”nofollow”>🙂

    • From tomorrow’s forthcoming development log:

      Installed the “Disable Emojis” plug-in:
This disables the emoji crap introduced in WordPress 4.2 (are
there any adults there who have the slightest concept where all
of these hacks that try to guess the user’s intent without any
      formal model of quoting…[Read more]

    • I should note that the “Disable Emojis” plug-in will probably not affect emojis turned into images which are already in the database. “Crap corrupted in the database stays in the database.” Existing corrupted comments will have to be edited one by one to fix them.

I am sure you have noticed this but the formatting in brackets is seen Ex. “” on the Flight Simulator post when only the first two paragraphs are shown.

    • This is an unfortunate interaction between the WordPress shortcode mechanism for indicating captions to figures and the plug-in which constructs excerpts for posts longer than the specified number of paragraphs.

The fact is that WordPress, BuddyPress, and its universe of plug-ins are an enormous kludge which doesn’t really understand what it is…[Read more]

Fantastic to have this website, filling up with old friends!

On my Chromebook, the Header on Home fills my screen, and it is only when I scroll down that I can confirm what is on the page. Very minor detail.

    • Do you know the dimensions of the screen on the Chromebook (screen width and height in pixels)? Could you send a screen shot of the header filling the screen?

The site seems reasonably well-behaved in iPads and iPhones, but the theme has all kinds of special cases for mobile devices. It’s possible that it may need to trigger one of the mobile…[Read more]

I noticed yesterday that I was liking comments and posts successfully before logging in. I realized it when my own avatar didn’t show up.

I just noticed that when in the dashboard, the “Visit Site” link in the toolbar drops me out of secure mode. http:// should probably always redirect to https://, too.

happy2b has a bug in that her avatar does not show even after she refreshes when she clicks like.

    • With her agreement I signed in as happy2b to see if the same problem would happen with my system. I liked “What I got for Christmas” and her avatar showed up. My guess her computer might be blocking the code somehow.

I think part of the double message problem is the meassage is going to two chat streams. A Member sets up a conversation with another Member multiple times therefore the message goes to each of those Conversations. When I get time I will try to test out more.

    • John, why is there the word “Spam” under your name? Is that a new function to reject a comment.
I was wrong. The doubling happens even with one conversation only.

    • Dime replied 2 months ago

I don’t see “Spam” now as a Contributor.

Trouble with image uploading from PC

    “snowman2017.jpg” has failed to upload.
The uploaded file could not be moved to wp-content/uploads/2017/12.

    • Chef replied 2 months ago

This should now be fixed. The process of moving the Web tree under management by Git apparently changed the permissions in the upload directory so that the server couldn’t write into them. I restored the permissions to their original value.

    • Thanks. I thought it might be that but it looked like I had permission. Great job on the move to Git.

You don’t have to be logged in to “Like” something. (This is why we often see the count of likes greater than the number of avatars shown.) Clicks on likes from read-only guests should pop up an invitation to join and be otherwise ignored.
