Wish List

Is there any way to unsubscribe from notifications of all activity of a post? As it is, it seems one receives notifications from a post in perpetuity if one has ever liked or commented on a post.

    • If you have not commented on a post, but just liked it, un-liking it will unsubscribe from notifications. If you’ve made comments, only deleting all the comments will unsubscribe. This is the way it’s implemented in BuddyPress, and changing it would be a major development project, especially doing so in a manner that didn’t slow down dramatically for posts with a large number of comments.

    • What type of notification? Is this the old email notifications or the newer ones? The old email ones can be unsubscribed easily.

    • Thanks for responding. It’s no big deal and certainly not worth significant effort to change. But once you’ve interacted with a post, you’re stuck with it for life as a practical matter.

    • The easy way but inelegant way is to make a “clone” of the post. The copy of the new post has no connection so no notifications. Those who want to still engage with the post can copy and like it.
In the history of the site this only happened twice and was a special case.

    • Simply, asking the writer of the old post to move the discussion to a new post might be the easiest way to handle it.
What posts are causing Notification Grief? Send a PM if you want to keep it private.

Is there a way to disable all notifications? It is a real pain to clear them all the time.

Dear Santa, oops, I mean John.
What I would really like to see, (if it already exists, it needs a prominent link), is a “How To” area.
Personally I know “squat” about WordPress. My days of posting are limited to Yahoo groups and Facebook. (for example) How do you post a video? It was explained to me, yet when I posted it that way, no video showed up so I deleted the post. My first attempt was a link to a page on my own website because I could not get it to work. Do others have this problem? I would venture to say they do. I understand the bandwidth constraints and larger storage…[Read more]

I like the way sites like Quora and Ace of Spade HQ let the “Read More” link expand the post in question within the top-level feed. On Ratburger, it follows the WordPress default of opening the page in a separate tab or window.

    • This is a WordPress site. The goal from the outset was not to do large-scale software development of features which might be nice but do not fundamentally improve the utility of the site. We have precisely one software developer—me—and any local modifications have to be maintained into the indefinite future.

Many of these sites that expand in-line do so by downloading the entire text of the post to the user’s browser, but use a container with “display: none;” to hide the balance of the text. This avoids a page reload, but at the cost of dramatically increasing the size of the dow…[Read more]

    • Good points…

I’ve been thinking I need to work on my website because it was too slow – the homepage loads in 5 seconds and the blog in 7. Time to streamline some. Any thoughts on a good, efficient WordPress theme?

    • “good, efficient WordPress theme?”
I don’t think a theme is responsible for WordPress’s lack of goodness or efficiency…. /-:

Is there any way to stop email notifications for posts that I make? I am getting spammed by this site whenever I post a thread, getting a message for every single comment. I do not need the reassurance that people read my posts, and I want to turn it off for all posts I have made or will make in the future.

Is there anyway to change the color of the PM notification so it stands out more? I think it is the same color as a like notification now.

    • Thank you for all your great work.

    • As of Build 127, notifications of new private messages in the drop-down list from the notifications bubble in the admin bar will be in subdued orange {rgb(230, 138, 0)}. Since there are changes in a CSS file to support this, you may have to flush your browser cache and reload the page before you see this. Details will be in tonight’s post on the Updates group.

So, I’ve been contemplating the disconnect between what WordPress and BuddyPress make possible, and what I consider to be state-of-the-art in web interaction, inline notification, dynamic content updates without paging or reloading, and fully functioning editors for both posts and comments.
As we are at 100+ builds on ratburger now, it seems the level of customization required to make a truly friendly website from the above components is prohibitive. And no, I’m not going to help write PHP. What little I’ve had to do for work purposes, and some past experience on personal projects,…[Read more]

    • Among the attractive features of Discourse is its uncanny and wholly intuitive handling of notifications. If a notification would take you to a particular comment, visiting that comment in any open tab will clear that notice without further action. If you have topic open at the last comment and a new one is posted, it will dynamically show up, right after the notification shows up. And once you scroll down to read it (or it is small enough to already be fully visible), the notice will self-destroy.
It also remembers your place in any topic you visit, taking you back to the right…[Read more]

    • I’ve looked at the demos, and at least with the themes they use, the appearance to the user is much more like a traditional discussion forum than the blog with comments presentation used by most WordPress-based sites. I don’t know if it’s possible to adapt Discourse to that model, but I think it would be necessary if new users weren’t to find what they saw too different from their experience on other sites (many of which are WordPress-based).

I’m somewhat concerned with their use of Docker for deployment. I have nothing against the container architecture, but the whole thing seems…[Read more]

    • Yes, out of the box it doesn’t look like a blog. But there’s a plugin for that:
As for the docker deployment setup — meh. I intended to work out the bare deployment requirements for a generic virtual private server. The docker imager approach appears to be their preference in order to make the app easier to scale to large installs. Not necessarily a bad thing.

I recognize the pain of putting many months of effort into a project, but it seems to me to be a no-win situation:
      1) devote a huge additional effort to clean up the…[Read more]

I’d like to have on the home page a count of how many people have signed up for the website. Names aren’t needed. It would be nice to keep track of the increase in the number of Rats. Dime tells us every other month what’s going on; who wants to depend on him.

    • John, put up what I thought was an update so I didn’t one month.
The Members are at 88. The best way to judge the traffic of the site is to look at the statistics in the Activities menu. Unless people want to write there is a lot of reasons to become a member.

    • Check out the Dashboard (icon that looks like a speedometer in the administration bar at the top or direct link https://www.ratburger.org/wp-admin/).

As of build 119, prompted by this request, you’ll now see the number of members and the number of administrators in the “At a Glance” section.

This will be documented in detail in today’s post on the Updates group around 22:00 UTC.

Is there any way to get notified of new comments on posts with a comment of my own, and only in-band? I don’t want email notifications. If I comment on a post, I get notifications of additional comments just the way I want (no email). But the subscribe without commenting feature requires my email address.

    • Do you mean “Is there any way to get notified of new comments on posts without a comment of my own?”

You should be notified in-band for any post on which you’ve commented, but at present there is no way to “follow” a post on which you have not commented. This is not a feature of WordPress or BuddyPress. Implementing it will require local code which we will have to support until the end of time.

Being inordinately fond of sledgehammers which keep me from spending a week swimming in the sewer of WordPress code, there’s always the option of posting a comment which simply says, “…[Read more]

    • Here is a suggestion for an user workaround.

      1. Block noreply@ratburger.org to stop getting email notifications.

    • Ok. I’ll do C4C in the future.

Should there be a way to prevent huge white spaces from happening in comments?

    A Glitch in the Matrix

    • If a user types in, (or, more frequently, pastes from another source), text containing white space, WordPress slavishly replicates it in the post or comment posted here.

It would be possible to filter text before posting to eliminate nugatory white space (and, I suppose, in the interest of diversity, brown, yellow, red, and black space), but that’s just another damned thing to be done, and at present we only have one damned soul to do such things. So, if it happens, it’ll be a while. That’s why there’s a scroll wheel on the mouse.

    • Yes, tell people not to add them to their comments. I took it that TKC added the spaces on purpose. (I could be wrong.) There were about 15 carriage returns. (I took out a lot of them.)

    • I have found that the “edit” function works well for comments and post. When something is strange this is the process that will work.

      1. The member edits to fix the comment.
      2. If 1 does not work I am willing to use Admin to help with the Edit.
      3. If it is a system bug, members deal best they can and wait for the fix.

    • It’s hard to see any good purpose to having put a bunch of carriage returns in that comment. Had it been some random user, I would have assumed it was a troll being disruptive. I mean, it’s not like there was a punch line at the bottom or anything. I figured TKC just leaned on a key accidentally before punching “post.”

Yes, I have a wheel on my mouse and am quite adept with it, if I do say so myself. It’s still obnoxious to have to scroll way down, especially on a phone .

    • But we are adults, who are responsible for our own actions. If somebody hits “Enter” twenty times at the end of their post, that’s their responsibility, not necessarily up to mecha-Timmy to mitigate, right?

    • Of course we are adults. That’s not really the issue. My request was inspired by a recollection, perhaps erroneous, that John had requested and obtained a similar feature in the legacy site. Specifically, that multiple carriage returns at the end of a comment would be ignored.

In any case, errors happen and the perps don’t always know or care to correct. That’s why we have roadside trash pickup. It’s no big deal. If it happened often, then it would be.

    • As of build 121, trailing white space in posts and comments is trimmed at the time the object is saved in the database. This does not affect existing posts and comments in the database unless they are edited, at which point the trailing white space will be trimmed.

Is there a way to have daily digests sent for threads to which I subscribe? I would rather get one big email a day

    • No. This is not a feature of WordPress/BuddyPress and would be a major project to implement. (In fact, the existing E-mail notifications are not a feature either, but provided by a plug-in which we used as-is.)

I think the way forward is to reduce the reliance on E-mail and transition items like this to “in-band” notifications on the site. With the major additions to notifications made in the last month, you can see most traffic of interest purely by watching notifications, which are now updated automatically even if you don’t refresh the site.

Also, to follow activity on the sit…[Read more]

Hello John Walker, I have a request. This a.m. I had a need to do a search for words posted here at Ratburger. The words were Sermo Liber Vita Ipsa and were written in a comment.

I searched for the words but it did not find them. I then went to the member’s page of who I thought had posted them to see if I could see the member’s posts and comments, but currently it seems the answer is ‘no’. Any plans to provide links to the posts and comments of members under the member profile?

    • I think the fastest way is to do a Duckduckgo.com search.
      I will try this.

    • I did this on duckduckgo.com
      site:ratburger.org Sermo Liber Vita Ipsa

    • This is not a feature of WordPress/Buddy Press. To add it would require:

      1. Design how the feature is to work (should it only list recent posts/comments for a user or all, or allow users to edit their own comments from the page?) and how it is to be integrated (on a user’s profile page, or a separate query page?).
      2. Write local code to implement the design.
      3. Support it until the end of time (or the end of Ratburger, whichever comes first), integrating the changes into every new release of WordPress, BuddyPress, and any plug-in affected by them. This integration is not a…[Read more]

    • Thanks for the information, John, and 10 Cents. Given the effort involved, I think the suggestion by 10 Cents is a good work around. As I would characterize my request as a mere ‘convenience’ and not a ‘need’, I don’t think it is that important. I was just curious. Now I know. Thanks again.

Could we have a link to the log-in page in the “menu” drop-down? On mobile devices, it’s a long scroll down to the bottom of the page to log in. This matters because I am being asked to log in frequently; the device does not remain logged in for more than one day. Fixing that would also be helpful.

Is it impolite to wish for two things in one comment?

    • After clearing out cookies, I’m staying signed in to the Rat for several days so I’ll quit my whinging about no log-in button in the menu at the top.

    • As a side-effect of the changes to make notifications appear properly on mobile devices, a log-in link now appears in the administrative bar at the top when a user who isn’t logged in views the site from a mobile device.

See the Updates group entry for 2018-03-17.

      We aim to please.

      We usually hit “irritate”.

    • I noticed and appreciate the change. I, too, often hit “irritate”, sometimes intentionally and sometimes not.

Well, you know how it is: if you want something done, make it easy to do. Surely this applies to getting people to sign up readily to publish a TOTD. When @10cents makes a pitch for that in a comment, people respond in the manner of an impulse purchase. Very good.

So how do we cover the other instance, that of the person wandering through her day who suddenly thinks of a Thought and wants to sign up? She can root around various messages to find an old pitch, or search for a link she may have saved. All true. But how about making it easy?

How about a link to the current TOTD signup…[Read more]
