You think you had a bad day…

Engineer: I’m calling to report the total loss of my truck.
Insurance agent: What happened to it?
Engineer: It was hit by a rocket.
Insurance agent: No, what really happened to it?

This was the January 17, 1997 attempt to launch the first GPS Block IIR satellite.

  1. Great story! I had never heard of this.

Super thankful that they were prepared enough that their was no loss of life. There measures were stretched for sure.

I love the line, “This is bad boys.” as the launch manager headed for cover under his console.

  2. In 2008, there was a panel discussion at the Naval Research Lab for the 50th anniversary of Vanguard 1.  A person who was in the blockhouse for the explosion of TV-3 said that they did not have any air packs or emergency air.  Fortunately, the rocket tipped away from the blockhouse.  He wouldn’t have been on the panel if the rocket had tipped towards the blockhouse.
