Maybe I’m Amazed

I am so enjoying the political scene. Today, the cherry on top is the Art O the Deal show, with POTUS offering a 10 year Amnesty to dreamers who have jobs, are not felons, speak English, have assimilated , in other words, they get the same deal as if they waited in line for ten years.

So, in exchange for 1.8 million assimilated residents, we get real limits on chain migration, killing the lottery , serious funding for the wall and the border and serious cuts in LEGAL immigration.

Tom Cotton has come out and with a smile , supported the deal. He knows the process.

Review his twitter feed for a good perspective

The Dems are going bat guano crazy.

The vocal base is reacting to the word “Amnesty”. not yet realizing that control of the language is critical in negotiation. Trump just defined ‘Amnesty” on his terms, which means we get to get to best of the ‘dreamers’ after they wait ten years. Ten years of prosperity changes political views a lot. It is merit based amnesty.

It moves the whole debate to making the Dems fight for what they really want and takes their figleaf ‘dreamers’ off the table.

This is why a dealmaker is better than any ideologue when things NEED to change.

  1. As Scott Adams noted this morning, Trump has led the Dems into a narrow box canyon. This could turn out to be a real win. The DACA folks have the sympathy of the majority of Americans. That’s not the hill to die on. The other issues (ending chain migration, skills-based immigration vs. the lottery) have tremendous public support (60 to 70%).

Letting 1.8 M DACAs who are already here stay is small price to pay. Deporting them has always been a non-starter. Just because they get to stay, that doesn’t mean we have to go easy on them. They can still be made to pay penalties. But that’s a fine point. The main thing is to control immigration going forward. Don’t look back.

  2. The biggest reason Trump made this offer was so the Democrats could reject it. Schumer did today, in absolute terms. Schumer thinks that by doing so he has moved the Republican goalposts closer to what the Democrats want. In reality, it resets the game. With Republican majorities in both House and Senate, and a Republican President, the Republicans will write the bill they want and force the at risk Senate Dems to go along.

  3. The thing is to control the language and make the other party be the obstructionist. Trump has the tax reform to point. The Dems are always against things even when they benefit.

The wall has been a symbol of concrete resolve. A change in policy that can be seen.
