TOTD 2018-03-18: “You Will Not Go to Space Today”

Words by Scott Manley, music and performance by Skye Manley.

You can’t do rocket science (or engineering) without acronyms and jargon, so here’s a list of those used in the video.

There’s one goof: “the day they launched the escape tower” was Mercury-Redstone 1, not Mercury-Atlas 1, which failed for other reasons.

  1. Fun video, John.  Reminds me of Musk mentioning in an interview that a friend of his made him watch a video compendium of rocket failures when he found out that Musk was considering Spacex.

The new one for me is lithobrake.  Fabulous.

  2. If your booster o-rings are inelastic (and joint design is geometrically incompatible) — you will not go to space today.

1986 Space Shuttle Challenger catastrophic structural failure. God bless the many pioneers (in space and other endeavors) that made the ultimate sacrifice, and in so doing, cleared a safer path for us to follow.

  3. There is some very spectacular footage of the flaming chunks of SRB from the Delta II launch raining down on an employee parking lot.

Saw it originally on Strategypage.com, but could not find it there now.

Wonder how hard it was to collect on an auto insurance claim.

  4. Like. (The “Like” button mechanism isn’t working for me, probably because of something in Firefox that’s NoScripted. But I will still “like” today.)

    Welcome to Ratburger, Reticulator.

I haven’t had any trouble with the like function. TempTime has some but her problem got solved.
