TOTD 2018-04-14: Whence Ratburger?

This is a question of history.  I did some digging into the beginning of the site without particular success, other than revealing that Ratburger launched last December.   What prompted the rise of Ratburger?

Why the name in particular?  Please tell me there is a German co-worker named Herr or Frau Ratburger…

While I understand that this is John Walker’s server, is there any desire for additional support or assistance?  Is Chef someone from Ricochet?

Lastly, is this site open to people not ever associated with Ricochet?  How conservative do they need to be to ride the Ratburger?

See the open source code base for the site.  Scroll down to “About the Name”.  All will be revealed.

Chef is me, John Walker.  In keeping with Unix system administration protocols, I maintain separate accounts for regular user interactions (this one: John Walker) and another for administration (Chef).  With great power comes great responsibility, and when you can delete the entire content of the site with one fat finger, I only use the administration account when it is absolutely necessary.

This site is open to anybody.  We have a number of members who have never participated in the legacy site.  I hope we will have many more in the future.  This is a place for civil conversation without censorship, adverts, spyware, subscription, or page load times so long you can watch your fingernails grow.  The best way to double our membership is for everybody who’s a member to recommend the site to one or two other people.  If we double our membership and they participate actively, we’ll have a community as vibrant as the legacy site.  Then we’ll increase it by another factor of ten.

I’m not even sure what “conservative” means any more.  I’m a flaming libertarian.  The only thing which I think characterises people here is that we don’t want to see all of human progress since the Enlightenment destroyed by ignorant barbarians.  A few years ago, this wouldn’t have been controversial.  Now it can get you banned from “polite” venues.  Not here.

There is a method to send bitcoin to John Walker to defray costs.

    10 Cents:
It would be good to have an easy way to contribute to defray the costs. A free site in my book ironically is worth paying for.

    From John Walker:

Anybody who wants to contribute to the hosting charges of the site is welcome to send Bitcoin to:

    1JohnWCHQrJssKqyqUvN8EG541xcr4ojfs

(Yes, this is a vanity address, which it took my 32-core server the better part of a week to discover.  It is validated on the blockchain, so you risk nothing in using it.)

All funds sent to this address will be used exclusively to defray the costs of hosting.  Nothing will be used to feed the sharks.

    Well, almost nothing….

…depends upon how hungry they are.

All of us are adults and understand things cost money. For those who want to contribute can. (I am still trying to figure out how to send John some shekels.)

Dime; you are preaching to the capitalist choir! I am more than happy to pay for this service but you need to take responsibility for telling us how much and where to send.

You have my personal e-mail address so have at it.

Well then, John Walker… Let your members know what we need to do.

This conversation reminds me of my involvement with the Heritage Foundation. My husband and I attended so many wonderful lectures there for free, I felt guilty and ended up contributing and becoming an ongoing member.

I met John Bolton, Elaine Chao, John Stossel, Natan Sharansky, Gordon Chang, Walid Phares, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Coolest experiences ever on which one can never put a price tag.

Edit: Plus I get to talk to military historians on this site. :))

  10. How to join the Resistance:

    • Assume that there is a Resistance.
    • Do whatever you can to help the Resistance.
    • Lead your own portion of the Resistance.

    Take that, you Vichy bastards.
