Cynicism of the Leftist Elites – On Equality

One thing that we often hear about the left is that they want equality. As Jordan Peterson warns us, what they really want is equality of outcome and that is a recipe for disaster. What I want to talk about is that they say they want equality but I don’t think they really do want it. They just SAY they want it. And they say that they want it because that ideal (or value) is well established in the left all over the world and it sounds good and there are many people who will follow them, vote for them and support them just because of these preprocessed Marxist terms.

Let’s look at Cuba or North Korea or China. Do they have equality of outcome? How about equality of opportunity? Answer: neither. There are rules and outcomes for the elites of these societies that don’t apply to most of their citizens. This was especially true in the Soviet Union where there were special stores for special people.

Here’s the question for our leftists: do they know about the lack of equality in Cuba (for example)? I suspect they do and it doesn’t bother them at all. Not only doesn’t it bother them but they positively love Cuba, the Castro elite family, and the Cuban government. This is not in dispute, is it? Then why if they really want equality, do they prefer the system and leaders in Cuba?

Because equality is a value of America and they use the notion of equality here because it is a value that is esteemed here and by western democracies in general. They are holding up this value of ours and showing us that we aren’t achieving it. We aren’t achieving equality of outcome. But, that isn’t what we esteem and they confuse people deliberately by comparing outcomes rather than opportunities. When asked they would also tell us that we don’t have perfect equality of opportunity either but notice: their proof that we are a fundamentally bad country and bad government is almost always based on comparing outcomes between one group and another.

If they get unchallenged power in this country they will abandon the notion of equality (although they will lie about it) without a qualm. Because it was never really something they wanted. They just SAID they want it.

  1. Great post Larry, and again, am so delighted to be able to gain access to your observations.

I’ll sum up my thoughts in two succinct sentences:

You can have equality or you can have liberty. You can’t have both.

  2. Equality is a great word. It is hard to understand what we mean by it. People confuse it with uniformity. We all are not the same. Some people will have more and some people have less. People should be equals before the law.

Larry, who wrote this post? It is readable. 😉

    So true.

The left likes things to be ambiguous and in the gift of the government through enforcement of laws that deal with the problem specifically tailored for whoever they need for votes.

    Of course.

I think this country does as best as any country can possibly do. Yes, some defendants have access to far better lawyers but keep in mind we also have a jury system that is often biased for the defendant. (See: OJ trial which was an incredibly bizarre combination of the two.)

The impressive forensics and DNA technology of the 21st century add heft to my argument.

The only thing the Left cares about is power. All other things are means to that end.

Yes, good summary. That’s all there is to it.

And yet, they have this thing that drives them. They know they are on the spearpoint of the arc of history. They are the hope of progress for mankind. They know that science and arts have set the era and that they are born to match them with their science of philosophy and politics. These people are our natural leaders, born to it armed with the latest theories and proven methods. They sparkle and glitter while we poor naifs don’t know how to hold our forks.

We socially retarded people are their charges, their lot to bear in this life. But, they struggle manfully on in spite of how we conduct ourselves.

The left always uses perfection as their standard. So, it’s an easy case to make about how bad we are. Equality is an American idea that was put into practice better here than anywhere else.

they confuse people deliberately by comparing outcomes rather than opportunities

If humans are blank slates there’s no difference between equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. Unequal outcomes are then clearly the result of discrimination, systemic racism, or some other social ill. Otherwise, all people could achieve exactly the same results. This is at the core of leftist ideology and why any suggestion that groups can be intrinsically different is anathema to the Left. There can be no genetic differences in IQ, propensity for violence, or any other trait except, of course, sexual orientation. Apparently, that is the one exception that the Left allows.

Of course, all the evidence is that there are intrinsic differences among individuals and among groups. Expressing such hate facts gets one cast into the void, as happened to James Damore and Larry Summers (a leftist, no less). It’s been almost twenty five years since The Bell Curve was published and almost fifty years since Arthur Jensen published “How Much Can We Boost IQ and Achievement?” in the Harvard Educational Review. In case you’re wondering, Jensen’s answer was “Not much.” Or, to use Jensen’s words,

Compensatory education has been tried and apparently has failed.

It’s a testament to how far scientific discourse has degenerated that this journal would never publish such a paper today. When I was a student, Jensen’s ideas were hotly debated but I don’t recall any threats of violence. Now Charles Murray needs a security escort if he dares show his face on a college campus.

Every day, more evidence accumulates in support of the ideas Jensen, Murray, and others have advanced. Look for the Left to get ever more desperate in suppressing the truth. Like cornered animals, they will become ever more fierce as they are boxed in. And make no mistake, they are getting boxed in. The focus on the distinction between equality of opportunity and outcome is misplaced. The Left do not recognize any such distinction.

    So true.

Of course, we know that the left does believe in racial and group differences because they are the ones holding onto these distinctions for political benefit. They sacrifice these groups on the altar of their quest for power.

Implicitly, leftists do consider blacks inferior — this is why they can’t get drivers’ licenses, can’t be expected to hold down a job, can’t be expected to raise their own families, etc.

They exploit known and expected differences and tell us it’s our fault — and this causes these groups to fall further behind. But, they don’t care — because they SAY they want to help these people but they don’t mean it. Look at the inner cities where these leftists hold sway. This is what they want to do to the rest of the country.

No one claimed the Left was consistent. You’re probably right about the more cynical lefties. However, there are plenty of true believers among the rank-and-file. There are people who believe that race and sex are social constructs. At least, they believe those things in the abstract. When it comes to their own kids, they’re sure that inheritance matters a lot: the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Inconsistencies don’t bother them; they’re not even aware of them.

Agreed. I should have said the leftist elites because there is a sharp division between the gullible leftists and the ones who run the show.

I remember when Mondale was running against the Gipper in 1984 and the innumerable comments made by female friends espousing the “necessity to vote for Geraldine Ferraro.” I was appalled even then by this illogical thinking particularly because it came from very smart and accomplished women.

  14. Great post and comments. Just adding in that everyone, absolutely everyone who advocates for “equality” lives and incomes would improve (in theory) with the further implementations of these schemes.

The poor, of course have an easy calculation to make and it makes the most sense, although a quick trip to Venezuela would prove otherwise. But the intellectuals, the overeducated busybodies, those in government jobs, the arts, pundits, anyone with outsized influence over people without having large salaries would benefit ( in theory) .

So they are being selfish and short sighted.

Equality of opportunity is the opposite of equality of out come. The two ideas can’t work together.

Yes.  The leaders of the Left are the spiritual heirs of the French Revolutionaries who will erect guillotines as soon as they can get away with it.

Ordinary Leftists think they are “liberal” because they are morally superior to conservatives.  They are deliberately kept ignorant of cause and effect, ignorant of logical consequences, ignorant of economics, and ignorant of history.  There is a reason why they are called “low-information voters.”

“I think that democratic communities have a natural taste for freedom; left to themselves, they will seek it, cherish it, and view any privation of it with regret. But for equality their passion is ardent, insatiable, incessant, invincible; they call for equality in freedom; and if they cannot obtain that, they still call for equality in slavery.” — Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America, vol. 2, book 2, chapter 1 (1840).

Tocqueville had “progressives” figured out before they even formally existed.
