Go see this movie now – “The Death of Stalin”

Now this is comedy (but, also very dark comedy):

While watching this movie I laughed uproariously but some of the laughs were strongly drenched in horror at the fact that the movie actually presents rather accurately the history of this horrific time and this horrific man, Josef Yugashvilli and his pants-pissing sidekicks — you know, like Kruschev, Molotov, Malenkov, Beria — just for starters.

The proof that it’s accurate is that Putin doesn’t like it at all.

There’s some wonderful slapstick in this movie and all the antics are really very funny. The deputy secretary, Georgy Malenkov (played by Jeffrey Tambor), looks like someone from The Addams Family or Nosferatu. He gets put in charge for the interim of the funeral and that’s what this movie mostly deals with.

General Zhukov (played by Jason Isaacs) steals the show, BTW. Steve Buscemi plays Kruschev pretty well but he doesn’t have the right body type. No big deal. Beria (played by Simon Russell Beale) is hilarious and gets most of the gallows humor lines.

Go see this now.

  1. I suppose it’s too much to ask that everybody attempt an ersatz Russian accent, a la Boris and Natasha. Instead you get the intonation of British toff or American generic. Looks like it might be funny though and I await it’s arrival to Netflix.

  2. I was thinking how Stalin was a Georgian and that led me to George Washington. Could there have been two more different leaders? A great man uses power and leaves, a small man gets used by power and never leaves. (Generic he.)

Looks hilarious. The nearest theater showing this for me is in the PRSM*, which is too much of a hike from home for a movie. So it’s Netflix for me too.

  4. Larry, if you put up a video with coarse language please label it as NSFW.  We don’t want to get anyone fired and we don’t want any red faced parents. 🙂

Thanks for sharing the video. It is sad how crazy the USSR was at the time of Stalin’s death.

Already. Didn’t take me long to get to this milestone. Another week or so and I’ll be suspended and then gone in a month or so. This place is really strict. (Just a warning to really bad people like you, JC. What people don’t know is that my missteps are accidental but yours are carefully planned to skirt the edge of propriety and to have the moderators hopping.)

Not hopping but hoping, Koler. And please don’t talk to the Ex-president that way.

  9. I have to admit that Comment #8 was classic Jimmy Carter. Just the exact right mix of tweaking with a chuckle. I miss the good old days when more of this happened.

  10. I never heard of this movie until now but from the trailer, I think the almost unknown *Children of the Revolution* is in the same league — seen it twice, it’s brilliant at times, and Sam “Merlin” Neil is excellent, even in a small part :

Did not even think there were such things as Australian communists before ! (I would add a smiley here but I guess it’s not fashionable).
