  1. I liked basketball but was never very good. Two of my brothers were good and one played for a small college.

Tennis too was fun but I haven’t played in years.

What is that sport where you hit that little ball into ponds? I am sure Trinity Waters would know. He likes ponds a lot.

I see in the Dashboard this is Post 942 which means 58 posts to R1K.

Would this qualify as sports betting?  Are you trying to influence the outcome of the Ratburger Open?  You’d better lawyer up.

  3. Specifically, I am a fan of the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the prior two categories and of the Houston Astros in the latter.

  4. After a good day’s work, I enjoy adjusting the cushions of an evening while watching Buster Keaton demonstrate everything there is to know about sport, in its athletic and its ethical aspects, in his classic film College.

  6. I only watch college football — Alabama, since my family is from Mobile — but occasionally watch a Saints game. I don’t even commit to all SEC games. That’s just too much time I would rather be doing non-scheduled things.

I didn’t play any sport in high school, though I played soccer, baseball, basketball, and football growing up. In basketball, I was a good defender but not a good shooter. In football, I played tandem tight end and defensive end — wasn’t good at much beside blocking because I wasn’t disciplined enough to learn.

Ironically, I didn’t learn and appreciate the strategy of playcalling in football until I played video games later. I probably would have enjoyed the sport more and played better had I played the video games first.

  8. Hmmm… DBM; we have to talk:

    1. Bruins, Bobby Orr vs. Red Wings, Gordie Howe ?

    2. What’s with all those Mets players? The Yankees, Derek Jeter forever and his replacement Didi Gregorius who is fast nipping at his heels.

    3. I could love the GB Packers because of Clay Matthews alone, but I have to go with the Pats and … sigh… Tom Brady (as usual.)

    4. Can’t argue with the Celtics list you compiled though my Pistons were trying desperately to get through them to reach the finals in 1988/89.

Finally, my new favorite sport was introduced to the world during the Winter Olympics- halfpipe snowboarding. Those men and women are positively fearless!

My hometown was the single A farm team for the Mets from the late 70s-late 80s so about half of that ’86 Mets team played here. There’s a generation of Mets fans in central VA to this day because of it even though we changed parent clubs a number of times since then. We haven’t had pro sports teams in VA since the ABA’s Virginia Squires folded so you picked your favorites based on who was good when you were growing up or who your family rooted for.

The good news is that the proliferation of hackers has filled several buckets in my garage with top notch golf balls, so we’ll never run out, no matter how many we put in the numerous water hazards here.  Right behind our back yard is a bunker with poor drainage, so when a good rainstorm hits it is transformed into yet another water hazard.  We’ve had several balls in our Koi pond, but thankfully no finned friends with bumps on their heads.  As Cpt. Junuh knew, golf is the only sport where you are your own opponent.  Our faithful pooch Gwinnie can transform a perfectly good golf ball into trash in about 15 seconds.

Back in the day, I loved tennis.  Fancied that I served like Borg, had the grit of Connors, emoted like John, and was indomitable.  Sadly, I was alone in my fancies.

    Soccer, meh…
