A Dime for my thoughts?

As what was written on another thread, one views life from a perspective. The same image or experience is interpreted differently. One sees the hope. The other sees the despair.

It brought to mind an experience from my working days.  I spent a 37 year career at Univ. Calif. Davis as an analyst in the central administration.  UCD had a Christian Faculty and Staff organization which an engineering faculty member and I co-founded.  At one of our meetings one of the faculty members asked me if I would be willing to research and make a presentation on the ‘arguments for a naturalistic basis for religion’.  (Those of you who’ve spent much time on a university campus will appreciate what it means for a faculty member to propose a staff member doing such a thing, and how thoroughly the request illustrated the application of Christian principles on a campus.)

Anyhow, the research was fascinating but particularly interesting was a study done by a group in Canada.  They fitted study participants with a ‘shower cap’ of electrical sensors and then asked them to do their religious thing.  So, Hindus meditated, Bhuddists chanted, nuns prayed the rosary, Pentecostals spoke in tongues, and Baptists prayed.

They found that a particular area of the prefrontal cortex lit up like a Christmas tree in a similar manner for all these participants.  It was in interpretation of the results that the key point became apparent.

The researchers’ conclusions: we know that meditation has positive survival benefits so clearly man evolved to benefit from these various meditation-like activities.

I looked at their research and came to a different conclusion: a Creator, who is a Spirit outside our space-time environment, wanted to communicate with His creatures, who were part physical and part spirit inside our space-time environment, included an “antenna” that would enable them to receive spiritual communications.

The main point, as someone has said, there are no a priori facts, there are only a priori assumptions.  Therefore, we all need to be cautious because no one is unbiased.

  1. There is an entire field called “Evolutionary Psychology” that seems to be built up entirely on a house of cards of conjectures, guesses, and theories.

IMHO; is seems that when one looks deeply into this, the revelation of one’s insignificance in the universe takes hold and one thinks; “what does it mater, anything I do or say will amount to less than a grain of sand of significance as compared to all the sand on all the beaches of this miserable world”.

The “miserable world” thing is indicative of the hopelessness of some situations. Sometimes life seems hopeless and people take steps to end it. WRONG ANSWER.

Maybe tonight I am particularly attuned to this post.  I live in a city that is very corrupt and fraught with dissatisfaction of the people regarding the political infrastructure that rules the city and of the lackadaisical attitude of the city employees.   I personally feel there are too many leaks in the dike for the number of fingers I have.  But enough of my problems, I exploded upon my spouse over just one of these tonight and I’m down in the dumps because of it. I’m insignificant in the grand scheme of things. At least in this city, so much less in the world and forget about the universe, it’s so vast that the grain of sand verses the beaches of the world is no way comparable to the despair one can be in if one lets the situation take control of one’s reality.

As an aside, something unusual I’ve noticed in my life. Let me share it with you; It seems like before every major holiday, important event or the like, I seem to just let loose and either put my proverbial foot in my proverbial mouth or do something really stupid. I think I reach a “breaking point”. So much to do and so little time.

Oh well, don’t let it get to you, gentile readers, I will survive, apologize and hope my apology is accepted.

To those whom it may apply to, have a Happy Fathers Day .

    I’ll vouch for you, Gerry.

“See, Mrs. Gerry, he wrote a post about things you shouldn’t say and wanted to run some field tests for the site. It was a success!! He now can add to the list and now knows when running tests safety gear is important.”

My mistake. I have written it again with more inclusive language.

See, To Whom it May Concern, the party of the first part wrote a post about things a sentient being  shouldn’t say and wanted to run some field tests for the site. It was a success!! That first part partier now can add to the list and now knows when running tests safety gear is important.”
