TOTD 2018-9-5: Bordering On

This will be about geography. How many countries does Spain have a border with? I will give the hint that it is more than two.

There is a fourth, but it gets debated as to whether it really qualifies as a country.

I knew France, Portugal, and Andorra.  But if you’re going to include Morocco and the UK, then for consistency sake you also need to add Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, The US, and a host of others.

  3. Perhaps more difficult than Spain, with what countries does France share terrestrial borders?

[spoiler title="Spoiler: Countries sharing borders with France"]

    • Spain
    • Germany
    • Monaco
    • Italy
    • Belgium
    • Switzerland
    • Andorra
    • Brazil (border with French Guiana)
    • Suriname (border with French Guiana)
    • The Netherlands (border on the half-French, half-Dutch island of Saint Martin)

France shares an adjudicated maritime border with Canada by virtue of the French islands of St Pierre and Miquelon), but this does not count as a terrestrial border.

French overseas territories are fully part of France, so their borders are considered international borders of France.

If you include maritime borders (where territorial waters of two countries meet at sea), then by virtue of its overseas island territories France also has borders with Canada (as noted above), Barbados/Martinique, Comoros/Mayotte, Dominica/Guadeloupe+Martinique, Fiji/New Caledonia+Wallis and Futuna, and Cook Islands/French Polynesia.

    (Uhhh… quote fail)

    There’s like 20, aren’t there? (I exaggerate)

I think I know 2 of the three… and I suspect the 3rd will be surprising to me.

Now I’m going to look at everyone’s answers.

Well, Sir, before I leave : do you take into account DOM-TOM as France too ? (that’s what I would have done).

    Yes.

I had to look it up. DOM-TOM is France’s overseas processions.

UPDATE: It comes from “Départements et Territoires d’Outre-Mer”.

  10. [spoiler title= " Answer Explained " ]

    1. France
    2. Andorra (A small country between France and Spain.)
    3. Portugal
    4. United Kingdom
    5. Morocco (Spain has some land in Africa.)

There might be confusion about 4 and 5. 4 is because Spain has a land border with Gibraltar and Gibraltar has been part of the UK for a long time.  5 is because across the Mediterranean Sea Spain has some small pieces of land on the northern border of Morocco. One was an island that became connected to the mainland after a sandstorm. That is the shortest border in the world now.
