One of the major knocks on Tesla in the video is that the chassis is substantially heavier and stiffer “than it needs to be”.  It’s interesting to note, however, that Tesla has always performed very well in NHTSA crash tests.  I wonder if that extra mass and stiffness contributes to this.  Conventional automakers have dramatically reduced the mass of their vehicles to help meet the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, to such an extent that some engineers believe crash safety has been compromised.  Tesla, as an all-electric vehicle manufacturer, operates under looser standards and does not have as much incentive to reduce the mass of their cars.
