Stung!

The Yellowjackets have won!  Macron suspends the punitive carbon tax.

The EU is the Devil’s Commonwealth.  I hope we may witness its dissolution.  Bliss is it in this dawn to be alive, pace  Wordsworth…

  1. Among all the discussion of this, I’ve seen little mention of the actual magnitude of the fuel tax increases.

First of all, according to an article in Euronews,  starting on January 1, 2018, there was an increase in the tax per litre of petrol/gasoline of € 0.039 (3.9 euro cents), and an increase on the diesel fuel tax of € 0.076.  The steep increase in the tax on diesel fuel was to bring it into line with the tax on petrol.  Previously, diesel was taxed at a lower rate in order to encourage purchase of diesel cars, which were believed to be less polluting.  Now that the “experts” have proclaimed that they’re just as bad as petrol-powered cars, they’ve decided to “harmonise” the tax on both.  (Whenever somebody in the government talks about “harmonisation”, hold on to your wallet.)

The proposal which sparked the recent ructions was an additional rise in the petrol tax of € 0.029 and diesel tax of € 0.065.  The plan was for continued yearly increases until the petrol and diesel taxes were equalised in 2022 at a total of € 0.78/litre.

Exacerbating the effects of the tax increases has been the rise in oil prices from January through October 2018, although there has been a steep decline into December.  In addition, the Euro has weakened throughout 2018 against the dollar, dropping recently to 1.14 dollars per Euro.  Since oil is priced in dollars on the international market, this has further increased the price at the pump.

The steep increases in diesel prices were widely felt because diesel cars are far more common in Europe than they are in the United States.  In addition, many commercial vehicles use diesel, which has previously benefited from a lower tax.

Now let me convert all of this to U.S. units, using the current exchange rate of 1.14 USD/€ and 3.785 litres/gallon.

    • January 2018 tax increase: petrol US$ 0.168/gallon, diesel US$ 0.402/gallon
    • Proposed January 2019 tax increase: petrol US$ 0.154/gallon, diesel US$ 0.344/gallon
    • Goal for tax in 2022 (petrol and diesel): US$ 4.133/gallon

Taxes currently account for around 60% of the pump price of fuel in France.

  2. The fuel tax was just the most prominent and most mentioned reason for the riots, as reported by the MSM.  More generally, it’s a revolt against the cults of globalism and climatism.  People in the melee were heard yelling that they want a Trump.  HDAHA.

If so, I’m willing to share our fearless leader to lend a helping hand to un nouveau président français because it is in our best interests.

This tidbit came from El Rushbo, so it likely has some veracity.  They probably just want a Frog Trump, not our Trump.  That would be worth fighting about, eh Hypatia?

  6. ET, TW: would It not be effing GLORIOUS if we’d see people all over the world emulating the mayor of Tijuana and proclaiming:

    Donald Trump is right!

    Il a raison, Trump!

    Ha ragione Trump!

    Pravo,  Trump!

(In case anyone was wondering what to get me for Christmas, I just figgered out THIS  is what I really want! )
