Dissenter is Here

Many news websites have eliminated their comment sections. YouTube has been disabling comments on some channels. Apparently, many journalists are upset about the feedback they’re getting on their articles. In the past, letters to the editor were carefully filtered, thereby allowing newspapers to censor any expressions of wrongthink. Gab has created a workaround called Dissenter: a way to comment at any website using a browser extension. It works with all your favorite browsers:

It’s hard to express just how much fun this is. Just go to your favorite lefty website (WaPo, HuffPo, Everyday Feminism, NYT, SPLC, the Guardian) and read the comments made on the main page. Sample comment on the HuffPo main page: “This is where fat women get their news.” Coincidentally, one of the news items on the HuffPo main page happens to be…

My Romanian pal Vee explains how Dissenter works, though he errs in claiming that it only works on Chrome. As he says, it is reminiscent of the early days of the internet. Enjoy it while it lasts.  [language warning]

  1. I want to see – but I don’t understand, where are there comments on, for instance, the main page of Huffpo? I don’t see them, can you give a link?

    Did you install the extension?

  3. Installed in Chromium.  It littered the screen with a scrolling marquee at the top.  When I clicked the icon to see if I could disable that, it sent me to a log-in page at Gab.  When I entered my Gab log-in (which I haven’t used for around a year), it said “These credentials do not match our records.”

    And…it was gone.

Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t work if you can’t sign in. This is probably true of most things.

Do I agree or dissent with this post to show my support? I am a dissent sort of guy, Doc.

To have even more fun, you could use Dissenter to make a comment on this page. This has amusing possibilities for the legacy site. Comments made in Dissenter can’t be moderated by the owners of the site or their minions. No Dissenter comments over there yet.

  9. Dissenter has been out for, what, two days and Vice is already freaking out. Naturally, there are already dozens of Dissenter comments on this piece, as well as on the linked Rotten Tomatoes page. Talk about the Streisand Effect!

Torba’s comment on the Vice article:

Gab is not a “far right social network,” David. Do you describe Twitter as “an ISIS social network? Or YouTube as a “pedophile social network?” I don’t think so. Gab is a social network that has always and will always welcome all people to speak freely.

No comment section on Vice? What a surprise. Not anymore!

Sargon’s comment on the Rotten Tomatoes page:

WELL WELL WELL. Look what we have here, a film where the ratings have been removed, and yet, I can still make my voice heard!

And this has become a dangerous thing. Too many fragile egos create chaos.

I recently read that Bill Kristol is actively working to challenge Trump in the 2020 primary. One of his favorite candidates is RINO William Weld.

God help us all if the GOP challenges our incumbent president. History shows that this leads to defeat in the national:

    1. Gerald Ford in 1976 (Reagan)

    2. Jimmy Carter in 1980 (Kennedy)

    3. George H.W. Bush in 1992 (Buchanan) and in the national, Ross Perot. Yes, I know RP ran as an Indie but he stole Republican votes … namely mine. Don’t think my guilt for inadvertently electing Bill Clinton has abated.

Same here… the password retrieval took about an hour to send.

It was worth it to read the huffpo comments.

I installed it this morning, and I like it! Mikey likes it!

    Why do you like it?

It’s like a shadow commenting system with few restraints. Nobody to moderate unpopular sentiments.

This means closed discussions can continue. Suspended people can reconnect. The banned is back together.

Yep, it looks like the entire URL text is used as the comment key.  But it allowed me to have two first posts both of which discuss you!

I guess you have to strip away the comment part of the URL. Dissenter should probably do that for you. Meantime, we can do it for ourselves at other WordPress sites, not that I’m thinking of any one in particular or anything.

Of course. Check out my most recent post. It has a Dissenter angle.
