  1. I understand that the person in question didn’t obey the rules. I understand that there, and that there must be, consequences for breaking the rules. But witnessing this entire episode has really lowered my opinion of conservatives in general: whatever he has done wrong, whatever rules he has broken, the person in question is a veteran, and if he has to be kicked out, it should be done with incredible sadness, not with glee, or joy, or smug self satisfaction.

Most of the conservatives I know in real life are veterans; I always assumed that conservative respect for veterans was sincere. Now, I am beginning to wonder; it’s beginning to look like a lot of cheap talk. I want to stress this: I understand that the rules must be obeyed. It is the general attitude that many on this site have taken towards the person in question and veterans in general that is troubling. One person even wrote a post saying that he knows all about how veterans should be treated because his father served; that in itself is so offensive, but people took him seriously. And he stated that veterans should be cut no slack. And from what I remember, I was pretty much the only person who disagreed.

If conservatives want to send men to war, they should be supportive of those men when they return. This doesn’t mean giving them a free pass, but it does mean treating them with respect, because without them we would be nothing. I hate to break it to those who think civility is the most important thing, it isn’t. The bravery of men who serve is the only thing that stands between us and slavery: if we don’t respect that, then we are lost.

Judy, I have seen no disrespect on this thread. I have seen deprecating humor and references to some poor jokes I have made to Damocles and Robert A McReynolds. Richard Easton always kids me. MJ Bubba has expressed some sort of sadness.

No one on the staff took any glee in this.

The fact that you feel the need to specify that no one on staff took any glee in this suggests that you know that there are those on this site who do. They reflect badly on conservatism-far worse than any misbehaving veteran does.

Perhaps not on this thread, but there has been tons of disrespect on other threads. I think you know that, which is why you specified, “on this thread”.

I am sorry if I gave this impression. I was just specifically talking about the Administrators. I know of no one on the site that would take glee in this decision.

    Judy,

You are showing disrespect toward them.

“They reflect badly on conservatism-far worse than any misbehaving veteran does.”

Some of them are veterans. Is that okay? I mean you are able to give your opinion and they are able to give theirs.

  7. I am a veteran. (Vietnam era) I follow rules. I want no special privileges on this site. I don’t think I am better than anyone on this site. I am a conservative for the most part. I voted for Trump. My account has not been deleted. (yet, gotta work on that.)

On the flip side, the group “I Hate drlorenz” doesn’t need a place on Ratburger. Just it’s existence speaks volumes of intolerance to a casual visitor to this site and should be eliminated. The founder of such a hate group should also be punished with at least a thirty, (30), day banishment.

Gerry, thank you for your service.

I am not sure if your second paragraph is humor or not. If not please write a separate post about it.

  9. Once every 65 minutes, a veteran kills himself. I am glad that most of the veterans on this site seem to be doing well, but lots aren’t: all of us, whether we are veterans or not, should be mindful of that.

The disconnect in opinion that is evident here, to my mind, is based on some kind of special treatment for simply being a veteran.  As one, I heartily support them and their difficulties adapting to civilian life.  What I don’t support is treating them as damaged goods, in some type of leftist victim status viewpoint, or lowering civil expectations.

  11. This was not a difficult call.

The person in question had been disruptive, derailing discussions seemingly just to get attention or for the chaos produced.  Having been on USENET since the early 1990s, I have seen this kind of behaviour for decades, and if not dealt with, just a few people, or sometimes only one, can derail and disrupt productive conversations involving hundreds or thousands of others who just want to stay on topic, contribute to an ongoing discussion, and help one another out understanding things.  Most USENET readers had a “kill file” which allowed you to list E-mail addresses (the main identity used in those days) of people whose posts you never wanted to see, so you could mute the disrupters.  Some of the more obnoxious of them would, of course, create additional E-mail accounts or forge E-mail addresses to try to get around the filters.  Why go to such effort to put disruptive material before the eyes of people who aren’t interested and don’t want to see it?  I haven’t the slightest idea—I  do not understand the motivation for such behaviour.

In the present case, we had repeated incidents of disruption, which resulted in cautions, and then after a particularly egregious repetition of such behaviour, a suspension of posting and commenting privileges.  This was then followed by an exploration of back-channels of disruption which were left open by the suspension (because WordPress and BuddyPress are poorly designed and full of holes) such as changing the display user name to offensive text and liking posts in the hope somebody would see the offensive name in notifications of likes or mouse-over of a like, and creating groups.

This made it abundantly clear that this individual, for whatever reason, was bent on using every possible available means to get attention and disrupt the on-topic discussions on the site.  There was no reason whatsoever to believe that if posting and commenting privileges were restored that the previous history of disruption would not resume.  Further, the only way to cope with the most recent round of disruption would have been custom software development to remove the ability to change avatar name and create groups, and that is just an insane way to respond to somebody who is simply bent on making trouble through any means possible, and doubtless other means of disruption would be discovered and exploited, resulting in an arms race with no benefit to the site at all.

Given all of this, I recommended to 10Cents that we delete the account and he concurred and deleted it.  In my mind, this was the correct decision.

judy, I share your feelings. 😥

I was so disappointed when I read about the account deletion.  Unless there was something generated which was far worse than  we all got to read, I don’t understand it.

I have suffered the pain and frustration of irrevocable banishment, no appeal, no recourse. (So did our friend.)  Fortunately I fetched up in our  Mischief .  As did he.  I can’t even imagine the loneliness of being expelled from here, too.

    Clemency,  my lords!

    Dont  be like THEM.

I think the way to deal with someone with the avatar name “So I was bangen’ this Supreme Court Clerk from BKK, Thailand when all of a sudden…” or a person who put up a pornographic group, “Metta Tantric Therapy” or a person who puts up a bunch of unfocused comments is to realize they don’t want to be on a family friendly site.  Why would they? There are better places for that.

We have had no contact from this person so I doubt they want clemency or to be reinstated.  Our e-mail address is on the site. He had a chance to make his case a while back and doubled down on strange unfocused comments.  The hope was over time changes would be made. They were made but in the opposite direction of this site.

If I would have done the same things, I would hope the same thing would have happened to me.

  15. Unless anyone has any objections, I will revert this post to draft in 24 hours. This person is no longer a part of this website and I don’t feel comfortable having this on the public or private part of the site. I won’t delete it and if there is interested it can be brought up again.
