Werewolves of Laredo

Before her retirement many years ago, my mother was a professor at an institution of higher learning in Laredo, Texas, teaching Spanish Literature and English as a Second Language. I ended up following her career path, though in a different discipline (History).

Anyone who has worked in academia will tell you of some of the strange and bizarre excuses that students come up with for missing class. My mom, however, encountered one that I doubt I’ll ever top. Once, a female student of hers who was pregnant said she couldn’t make it to class one evening because her parents, who were very superstitious, believed that if she went out during a full moon she would end up giving birth to a werewolf.

I wonder what Warren Zevon would’ve thought…

Proof that we need to close about half of higher education to cut back to an educable student body.

Coming from Laredo myself, I’m astonished whenever I see a pregnant woman going out in the full moon.  Doesn’t anyone think of the poor children?

I know it is private but were you born on a full moon, Damocles?

Yes I was, but safely inside and surrounded by silver just in case!

Some people think I’m wealthy, but in my case the silver spoon in my mouth when I was born was just good parenting.

You wore a mask too, right? That was also good parenting.

  6. You know what I think about academics such as yourself who truly interpret history in a non-political manner.

I don’t think you’re a conservative because you were born and raised in Texas; you just inherited the IQ to acknowledge the facts.

There’s a fine line between good parenting and overkill.

I got where everyone forgets to thank you right at least, Damocles. I was going to write something else but it has slipped my mind. Oh well it probably wasn’t important.

In today’s world I would totally agree. In my early Boomer years, I did not enjoy the benefits of helicopters. Instead, I was highly annoyed that my parents made me hold a part-time job, study hard for the SATS, get into a good college, interview well and then… LEAVE!

I left home two months after graduation and roughed it in NYC on a pittance of a salary.

Did not bother to ask my parents for a stipend because I knew I’d get no empathy from the Greatest Generation. In fact, my father told me I had been given everything in life (he was not wrong) and I eventually made the donuts simply because I would have been ashamed not to.

I don’t have kids, but if I had, I would have raised them the same way.
