Snopes is “fact checking” the Babylon Bee

Maybe this has already made the rounds… but was wondering if you all had seen this. Snopes is “fact checking” the Babylon Bee. Example:

My guess is that they don’t have enough actual “fact checking” to do, so they’re making work for themselves by “fact checking” this Christian satire site. Totally lame. Also, they often start these articles with some sort of claim that goes, “Some readers were confused…” I say that’s BS.

The BB’s most recent podcast was devoted to Snopes. They discussed the Snopes article I screenshotted above. Excerpt (11:55):

“… she walked back her comments pretty shortly after she initially made them though. I think it was just within a day or two…. Snopes wasn’t even aware that she had walked back her comments. At least, they claimed not to be because the original version of the story that they ran  with omitted that fact. So I don’t think that got picked up or circulated.”

“Yea that was the basis of the whole joke.”

“That was the craziest part to me, was that Snopes fact checked our joke about it… and they never fact checked her claim… she actually made a false statement.”

“They are usually more thorough than that, I have to say. This Snopes seems sloppier than past Snopes…”

The BB doesn’t mind that Snopes is fact checking them, but they do wish that Snopes had a “satire” category:

“If they had a ‘satire’ rating, they could just stamp our stuff as satire then move on, call it a day. And you don’t have to get into our motives and what we were trying to accomplish with it. None of that is necessary. They know that. I’m not sure what their aims are here. I’m not going to guess at them. But it would be that simple in my mind…”

They went on to talk about two other “fact checking” posts that Snopes published about the BB (here and here).

Then, they talked about the difference between fake news and satire. This section was actually the main part of the podcast. I stopped listening here.

Yesterday the BB published another satire post about Snopes:

That cracks me up! Plus, I like how they aren’t taking this lying down.

  1. Snopes need to fact check Saturday Night Live. That Weekend Update has been spreading lies for years.

  2. There’s a bit of ominous subtext, with the suspicion that snopes’ ratings affect sites such as Facebook which rely on snopes for information about who not to promote as fake news.

In a recent newsletter, the Bee said a past Snopes fact-check had prompted Facebook, which was then in a fact-checking partnership with Snopes, to “threaten us with limitations and demonetization.” Facebook eventually acknowledged the mistake and said the Bee piece — about CNN buying industrial washing machines to “spin” news — “should not have been rated false in our system.”

And here they get credit for good Libertarian sensibilities!

  3. Snopes spent ten years building a brand with trustworthy reporting.   Now for the past ten years they have increasingly used their brand to aid Leftists and harm conservatives.   They are themselves Fake News.

Based on a number of leftists I know, I actually find this plausible.  They are easily confused and have no discernible sense of humor whatsoever, so they find satire from the Babylon Bee to be existential threats.

I don’t think so.   I think Snopes was serving up an opportunity for Facebook to shut down Babylon Bee.   Facebook saw the number of Babylon followers and wisely chose not to pounce on that opportunity.   With Facebook taking their time to test how the wind was blowing, Babylon Bee quickly put up a great defense and counterattack.

That is how the Leftists work.   They don’t need to conspire.   One just decides to generate an opportunity for one of the others to act on.   Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t.   There won’t be any negative consequences for Snopes, though I hope conservatives will come to more clearly see their Leftist bias.
