College Football 2019 – Week 14 (Thanksgiving Edition)

This Thanksgiving weekend marks the effective end of the college football regular season. All of next weekend’s games will be conference championships, followed by the Army-Navy game on December 14, and then the postseason bowls and playoffs beginning on December 20.

This week’s matchups offer a number of traditional rivalries from coast-to-coast. In the ACC, the #3 Clemson Tigers 🐅 have a showdown on the road at the South Carolina Gamecocks 🐓, the Florida State Seminoles 🏹 are at the #11 Florida Gators 🐊, and the North Carolina State Wolfpack 🐺 host the North Carolina Tar Heels 👣. The Big Ten has the #1 Ohio State Buckeyes 🍂 at the #13 Michigan Wolverines 〽️ and the #12 Wisconsin Badgers 🦡 at the #8 Minnesota Golden Gophers 🐿. The SEC gives us the #5 Alabama Crimson Tide 🐘 at the #15 Auburn Tigers 🐯, the Texas A&M Aggies 🤠 at the #2 LSU Tigers 🐅, the Vanderbilt Commodores ⚓️ at the Tennessee Volunteers 🔶, and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 🐝 hosting the #4 Georgia Bulldogs 🐶. Out in the PAC-12, the #14 Oregon Ducks 🦆 host the Oregon State Beavers 🐿 for the Civil War, the Stanford Cardinal 🚩 play the visiting #16 Notre Dame Fighting Irish ☘️, and Mike Leach and the Washington State Cougars 🐆 are playing the Washington Huskies 🐺 in the Apple Cup. Finally, in the Big 12, Bedlam comes with the #21 Oklahoma State Cowboys 🤠 hosting the #7 Oklahoma Sooners 👨🏻‍🌾, the #21 Iowa State Cyclones 🌪 play the Kansas State Wildcats 😺 in this year’s Farmageddon, and in their annual game for the Chancellor’s Spurs, the Texas Longhorns 🐮 host my Texas Tech Red Raiders 🏴‍☠️.

The Red Raiders are nine-and-a-half point underdogs, but miracles can happen…

And speaking of miracles… 😎

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! 🦃

  1. Going in to the game with Vanderbilt, the Vols are currently the highest-ranked of all the teams with five losses.

    Five losses.

And that looks like progress from where this sad program has been.   Tough times.

    Go, Vols.

  2. Wow!  The Red Raiders have brought their A-game today!  14-0 in just the first quarter.  They’re making the Longhorns look like high schoolers.

Maybe the Apple Cup will be a good game.

The only thing that would have been better than a Coug victory in the Apple Cup would have been if the Fuskies needed the win to go to a bowl game.  But a Coug victory would still make those apples sweet!

Be kind. I was the sports editor of the Vanderbilt Hustler and let me tell you I have never had a tougher job. I worked hard to highlight defensive and offensive “moments” but competing as a highly academic school in the SEC is impossible. (I will never understand how Stanford/Duke does it!)

Dating myself here- but one of the highlights of my ‘journalism’ career was interviewing Bear Bryant.

Regret- I missed VU QB Jay Cutler who was drafted by da Bears.

    Pictures !

None, unfortunately, because I didn’t have a cell phone in those days! The college paper highlighted a picture of him but I wasn’t worthy of the extra 6 lines. 🙂

I can give you some memorable conversation, though. I was the first female he ever agreed to interview- yeah, it was the bad ole days. In any case, I was prepared because thanks to my dad, I always understood the game so every one of my questions was based upon technicalities- various different defensive strategies and running vs. pass offense. That latter subject was a particularly sensitive one then because both the NCAA and NFL were fighting the “West Coast Offense” concept that was beginning to gain respect.

I was originally given 15 minutes to speak with G-D Almighty, but it turned into a one hour interview. He told the VU AD that he’d never spoken to a college reporter with more knowledge of the game. That interview with him remains fresh in my mind although it occurred decades ago and I unfortunately have lost my college scrapbook. ):

About that, Mikey… What’s up with our boy?

I think a lot of the players on last year’s team were seniors, so this was a rebuilding year for Leach. But the Cougs are going to a bowl game this year. Probably the Cheez-It Bowl in Phoenix.

  7. The Vols beat Vandy.

    Memphis Tigers beat Cincinnati.

A good showing.   Vols are hopefully on the way up.   Memphis Tigers clinched the AAC West Division title, whatever that is.
