Favorite prayers: Anima Christi

Soul of Christ, sanctify me.

Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O good Jesus, hear me.

Within Thy wounds hide me.

Suffer me not to be separated from Thee.

From the malignant enemy, defend me.

At the hour of death, call me.

And bid me come to Thee.

That with Thy saints I may praise Thee, forever and ever. Amen.

===========================================

This is one of my favorite prayers, perhaps even my #1 favorite. It is attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola.

It is common for Catholic prayers to take their name from the first word or few words. Such is the case here. Anima Christi is Latin for Soul of Christ. Another example is the Lord’s Prayer, which Catholics call the Our Father.

  1. Here is the evening prayer from Luther’s Small Catechism:

    …say this little prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have graciously kept me this day; and I pray that You would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong, and graciously keep me this night.  For into Your hands I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me.

    Amen.

Then go to sleep at once and in good cheer.

  2. 10 Cents:
Do you pray this in Latin, JJ?

    Here it is

    ANIMA Christi, sanctifica me.
    Corpus Christi, salva me.
    Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
    Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
    Passio Christi, conforta me.
    O bone Iesu, exaudi me.
    Intra tua vulnera absconde me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
    Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me.
Et iube me venire ad te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te
    in saecula saeculorum.

    Amen.

    That is a good prayer.

    The Jesus Prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Also the Kyrie Eleison: Lord, have mercy.

I love those prayers too. Have you heard this sung version of the Kyrie?

  6. It’s not something I do on my own. I do at mass if/when Latin is said, or when listening to beautiful Latin chants, such as this one:
