TOTD 2020-1-14: Relaaaaax

This is a new character from Japan called Rirakkuma. This comes from the words “relax” and “bear”.  It came from a cartoon and here is the 2D form.

Rirakkuma is eating a traditional Japanese snack on a stick. Is he making you relax?

I take lessons in how to relax from Snooks’s cat.

Is the Japanese word for relax a loanword?

    Yes, it comes from English.

Was there no concept of “relax” in Japan prior to the modern age?

How would you say “relieve tension” ?

There are different ways to say it but the loan words have a different nuance. English does the same when it uses foreign words. The loan words take up about 10 percent of the language.
