  1. As a point of reference between before and now here are two snapshots.

Active= (Confirmed Cases -(Recovered and Deceased)

    714= 908-(161+33)

  2. This is what “lockdown” looks like in California. Photo taken down by the beach at 1838 local time. This is about the normal number of people near sunset time.

This is what air traffic looks like in the Southwest US now (flightaware.com). Blue planes are inbound to KLAX, green ones outbound, gray to other destinations. The Oregon border is near the top of the picture.

  3. Here is the latest update on the situation in Switzerland and Liechtenstein [PDF], published on 2020-03-21 at 07:15 UTC.  As of this report, there have been 6113 cases tested positive and 56 deaths from the disease or its sequelæ.  The median age of those tested positive is 51.  I’m not going to post any of the charts because they are rife with selection effects (tests are largely applied to those with symptoms, for example, which skews the incidence by age) and useless to draw any epidemiological conclusions.

Gatherings of more than five people have been banned.

The federal election of 2020-05-17 on a variety of initiatives and referenda has been postponed to an unspecified future date.

  4. I don’t have any links but here in Maryland talk is that the Nat. Guard is preparing for the governor to declare a state of emergency. There is also talk of a full on quarantine similar to California.

Yesterday we went to a local farm for some meat and produce and it was hopping. Friday I was out and about and things seemed normal. Across the river in Old Town Alexandria things were open and people were walking the sidewalks. So far very little evidence of the apocalypse.

Maryland’s confirmed cases are at 193 with 2 deaths according to the tracking map Drudge has posted on his site. I haven’t gone into DC for a few weeks.

  5. So far, no lockdown.

Yesterday when  was in town people ewre friendly, as in leading up to Christmas – everyone friendly, helpful, courteous.  Even public hugging and smooching in the grocery store.  Then again, the line at the pharmacy was out the door and around the nearest corner.  Grocery store has made 8-9 am Tues, Thurs, sat open for business to voer 60s only.

We’re expecting another government announcement announcement tomorrow.  Could be the dreqded lockdown.

So, of course, one of my cats needs to see a vet.  And, of course, it isn’t Zorg, the fluffy do anything as long as you notice me cat, but Peabody, whose other name is Psycho…..  Let me know if you’d like updates.

If you need to take a psycho cat to the vet, check with the vet to see if it would be OK to give the cat a sedative beforehand.

Our vet is having us wait in the parking lot and coming out to take our pets, payments, etc. we are picking up some meds tomorrow for our little terrier mix. Her knee gets sore so we got her anti inflammatories.

It is important to know about Psycho. Keep us updated.

  8. Little has changed in my area. Strangers are friendlier and more courteous than usual. The waterfront is as it was yesterday, maybe more so. Kids are out skateboarding on the street and playing basketball in their yards. People are out talking to neighbors and checking in on each other.

I had on my ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ t-shirt on. Some guy from the neighborhood I didn’t know complimented me on the shirt and said he has a shirt with a picture of an M16 captioned “Don’t hate me because I’m black.”

Some of the neighborhood kids decorated the sidewalk on the block with some positive messages and pictures. One of my neighbors planted some daisy whirligigs on front lawns (click on image to enlarge). Some of the messages are

    Stay Healthy
    There’s no place like home
    Smile

[caption id="attachment_35621" align="aligncenter" width="768"] Love in the Time of Corona[/caption]

The silver lining to this disaster is that a sense of community will emerge. I’ll admit to being a bit surprised.

  9. Psycho update:

Called vets as soon as they opened.  They suggested live phone video, which I said was a non-starter.  Vet agreed to see her as a hand-off of crated Psycho at their door.  I called my vet nurse friend, and with teamwork we got HerSelf crated – without bloodshed, even!
Vet says that Peebs doesn’t have a UTI, but she does have a lesion on her little girl/lady parts that’s probably hurting her whenever she has to pee.  Left ear is clear, right ear infected.  Of course, being Peebs, it’s been her left ear that she’s fussed with.
She’s home again, indignant, but out of durance vile.  She’s had antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and shouldn’t need anything else for at least the next few days.
Hit the grocery store en route home.  Everyone really kind and generous.  Still a long line for the pharmacy.  Glad that I don’t need anything from them.
One of the positive cases is a primary school teacher in the South of the Isle, who’s apparently infected some pupils.  Fortunately, we’re based in the North and kids have been kept home the past ten days or so, sick with non-corona virus (corona doesn’t cause projectile vomiting).

  10. Here in Union County, NC (just south of Charlotte), we have 12 confirmed cases as of March 22. A young adult with a history of recent international travel was the first patient reported, as best I can tell, last Wednesday, March 18.  I think some of the “community spread” may have taken place in Charlotte, since parts of the county are “bedroom communities” for Uptown.

All public schools have been closed in NC since Monday March 16. All UNC-system colleges have closed their residence halls . Gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited. Restaurants and bars cannot have dine-in service, but can still offer take-out and delivery.

My church is part of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Atlanta. Our bishop, Metropolitan Alexios, has instructed all parishes in his See to limit attendance at services to 10 people. This includes a priest, deacon, and chanter, so a maximum of 7 laypeople can attend. Services at my parish are streamed. Pascha will be interesting.

Grocery stores are stocked, but hit-and-miss with items. For example, there are no chicken breasts to be found within at least 10 miles from my house. Chicken thighs, though, abound. Plenty of store-brand pasta; national brands gone.

One of our friends is the U.S. HR director for an international food-service company. Her firm has laid off 80% of it’s hourly labor force. She’s had a 20% pay cut, and the company is not paying out bonuses awarded for last year. This all happened in a week-and-a-half. My wife works at a chiropractic office; their making a day-by-day decision on staying open. We know a couple that were opening a taproom in our town. It was supposed to open this week; I hope they don’t go bankrupt before they’re allowed to open.

    Theotokos, pray for us!

Bless your kindly, optimistic heart and cotton socks!  The only way to get tranquiliser/sedative into Owr Peebs would require either two people to monkey-handle her to the ground, in which case we could then just en-cage her directly, or use a laser-sighted tranquiliser dart gun (and they won’t let me have mine back after that….never mind).

    Fortunately, the monkey-handling worked.

    Can we hear that story?

Alas, no.   I can’t afford to lose my Monkey of Mystery status.

Yes, but we will have to tranquilize you and to do that you need to get a target tattooed on the right spot. We would hate to miss. (or would we?)

I’ll just have Psycho Peebs run interference.  Live in fear……
