Ch ch ch ch annnges….

Group effort today- what changes will occur to our society by year one AV (After Virus)?

I will throw a few out to get it started….

1.The airline that rips out every middle seat and charges 15% more will fly full . All others will follow. Cattle car planes will die like steerage class on ships.
2. Restaurants will move in three directions
a. Fast Food- rebuilt pickup with pre-ordering (Already underway)
b. Dense metro areas will move to Kitchen Only with Pickup rooms, online ordering and menu and move to industrial locations for lower cost /sq ft.
c. Full service will move out of dense urban cores (except the top 1%) to larger space with more table separation or enclosed booths in the near suburbs.
3. Mass transit will die or modify to one third capacity . Begin to be replaced by golf cart like electrics that are rentable and self cleansing.
4. Over 50% of the white collar workforce will work from home and the numbers will be reduced by 30% due to reduction in office nonsense time suckers.
5.Skilled blue collar jobs will expand
6. As the supply chains come home, new manufacturing plants will locate in states with cheap real estate, a skilled workforce and friendly regulation. States will fight to adapt the fastest. The Blue models for states will be shattered.
7. Home schooling will have a foothold with 20% of the students. As the profits possible are recognized, investement in content offering will skyrocket.
8. Personal virus defense for body and home will explode. The same technology used in food processing facilities will rush to adapt to a new market.

I have not touched the social changes, the community design changes, the religious changes and so forth.

Open field, start running. No idea too small or too outrageous.

  1. You left out home brew or “Made in the U.S.A.” or the move from made in china to here.

(at least that is a hope for many of us.)

I began to touch on it with :

“5.Skilled blue collar jobs will expand

  3. Aspirational: we will stop incarcerating people for non-violent offenses, and go to civil commitments for the psychopathic murderers and rapists.  (Due-process-wise that’s not ideal, but there aren’t that many Ted Bundys, comparatively. ). Post-arrest, pre-trial security will be determined upon consideration of the accused’s individual resources and priorities, and will in no event involve jail.  Flight risks will be electronically controlled if the perp has nothing to pledge.
We will will want to avoid throwing a lot of people together in prisons or jails.;that will be impetus for the above changes.  Additionally:  if, as were now being reassured, it’s perfectly safe to let non-violent offenders out of prison—they why are so many locked up , at our expense?

It may be that, if the present decriminalization of minor offenses does not produce a huge wave of thefts, some of that behavior will remain de-criminalized. That also will reduce the number of people who enter the system as defendants.
The criminal system already had a huge backlog before this plague, which resulted in accused persons being penalized if they wanted to exercise their constitutional right to trial by jury.  When this is over, the backlog is going to be mountainous.  Some way will have to be found to reduce it.  I’m not sure what will happen to people presently mired in it, but going forward there will be plenty of incentive to bring in fewer defendants.

  4. Changes toward the negative? Cops will continue to act as though this virus still persists and begin inserting themselves into gatherings of 8 or more people. It will take a landmark case to dissuade the Boys in Blue from acting like the fascists they are.

  5. I hope healthcare facilities drop the “just in time” way of resupplying. I have no hard evidence, but believe this is one reason we are short on PPE. I also would like to see Joint Commission relax some rules on expiration dates.

Back when I was a kid, the Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization stockpiled large quantities of all kinds of survival supplies including medical gear just in case the Russkies attacked.  Today, there is the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which presumably has higher priorities such as keeping the black helicopters combat-ready and preparing the detention camps in case the alert “Serfs’ Up!” should cry out from the capital of the Imperium.

  7. I would put my money on:

    1)  Massive additional regulation.  The government only has two hammers.  One labeled regulation and one labeled spending.  This and or a full takeover of health care.

    2)  I expect unemployment will be in the double digits. Maybe greater than 20%.

I think we will be in an unstable environment and cannot be confident of anything other than the government will react in the only way it knows.  Spend money and pile on regulations.  Department of Infections, Epidemiology And Social Environment.    DISEASE

I do not think the low-information voters in even the most dysfunctional blue state are going to vote for Republicans.  The herd mentality is so solidly ingrained, and their distrust of information from conservative sources will continue to prevent them from breaking with the ‘devil they know.’   It is going to take more than pandemic and economic collapse to break the hold the Progressives have on political power in the blue states.   They may become miserable, but they will not change.

Rather than a full take over of health care, use the hammer on the hospitals, drug manufacturers, (prices and Made In The USA). Obvious why the drug manufacturers, but the hospitals, well if insurance pays, they pretty much accept what they pay, but if not insured, you will be indentured for the rest of your life. Not a fair practice.
