  1. Yeah, God forbid they should play the music at the actual event, but it wouldn’t be PBS without the BS. By the way, why are you watching PBS anyway, hair shirt at the cleaners?

  2. I watched Trump’s speech and the preliminaries and fireworks show afterward on the official White House feed.  I caught a few minutes of the earlier stuff on the PBS video here, but it was just too much fingernails on the chalkboard (Lincoln impersonator, anybody?) to abide.

There is this bizarre disconnect between Trump the orator and Trump the executive.  The speech was strong, unambiguous, and effective: putting American citizens first, protecting tradition, the family, and religious freedom, and everything else sane people support.  It could have almost been written by Steve Bannon.  But then, you know, next Monday, he’ll be back in the White House and Jared Kushner will be dictating policy and we’ll have another liberalisation of H1-Bs, another delay on E-verify, and a weasel-worded amnesty coming before the election.

At this point it isn’t like Trump has to deliver on his promises from 2016 to be re-elected.  He only needs to deliver on his promises from yesterday.  And yet, at this point, that seems unlikely.

  3. I feel your pain, Mr. W.  But what is the alternative to President Trump?

Certainly, 4 more years of Trump would not solve the problems of the US, but 4+ years of Biden/Whoever runs his meds would certainly make the problems worse.

We have reached a point where the real solutions do not lie in elections anymore.  The solution — if there is one — lies in a root & branch reconstruction after an abject financial collapse, which will be extremely painful for all of us, even people who live in other countries.  The positive part of the story is that, for better or worse, our Political Class is stumbling blindly into that financial collapse.  And after the storm, things will be different — and better.  Near-term pessimist, long-term optimist.
