  1. Fun fact: before launching his career in country music, Charley Pride tried to make it as a professional baseball player. One of the teams he played for was my dad’s hometown team: the Missoula Timberjacks. In 1960, my dad – then a college freshman at the University of Montana after having served a two-year stint in the Marines – actually remembered attending a game wherein Pride played.

Now you might wonder, how could my dad have remembered watching a then-completely unknown minor league baseball player? Answer: there weren’t very many black men living in Montana sixty years ago. Pride stood out.

  2. Nor was Charley Pride the only celebrity to have once been associated with the Missoula Timberjacks. The Timberjacks’ first manager, from 1956 to 1958, was Jack McKeon. In 2003, McKeon won the World Series as the manager of the Florida Marlins.
