Watching the exchange earlier today between Ted Cruz and Jack Dorsey, with each sporting epic beards, reminded me of a hit song from my youth, “Elvira” by the Oak Ridge Boys, released back in 1981. I kept expecting one of them to start singing “giddy-up ba-oom papa oom papa mao mao.”
Here’s a video of the Oak Ridge Boys performing the hit song at an awards ceremony back in the early ‘80s:
Another big Oak Ridge Boys hit from that same era was “American Made”, which most might remember as being used in a modified form in a series of Miller beer commercials. This recording is from 2009:
The songs remind me of a happier time in America. But while the ‘80s will never come back, there’s no reason why it can’t be morning in America again.
Never give up, never surrender!
