    Is there any way to unsubscribe from notifications of all activity of a post? As it is, it seems one receives notifications from a post in perpetuity if one has ever liked or commented on a post.

    • If you have not commented on a post, but just liked it, un-liking it will unsubscribe from notifications. If you’ve made comments, only deleting all the comments will unsubscribe. This is the way it’s implemented in BuddyPress, and changing it would be a major development project, especially doing so in a manner that didn’t slow down dramatically for posts with a large number of comments.

    • What type of notification? Is this the old email notifications or the newer ones? The old email ones can be unsubscribed easily.

    • Thanks for responding. It’s no big deal and certainly not worth significant effort to change. But once you’ve interacted with a post, you’re stuck with it for life as a practical matter.

    • The easy way but inelegant way is to make a “clone” of the post. The copy of the new post has no connection so no notifications. Those who want to still engage with the post can copy and like it.
      In the history of the site this only happened twice and was a special case.

    • Simply, asking the writer of the old post to move the discussion to a new post might be the easiest way to handle it.

    External link to Amazon does not open in new tab. Opens in existing RB tab. Trying to make sure that affiliate link gets credit. Separate issue; subsequent selection does not seem to carry affiliate link, unless it’s a cookie ref. Example, Stand on Zanzibar then select audiobook.

    • This link was in a group, right? The “sanitisation” of HTML within groups is done by entirely different code than that which handles regular posts and comments, and it strips off “target=” attributes as “dangerous”, which causes all links to open in the same window, overwriting the group (which, I suppose, they consider “safe”). Fixing this will require digging into the HTML filter code for groups, which is a horror almost beyond contemplation.

    when logged in, Clicking on any post reloads the page and does not let you into the post. (Like and unlike does work) (new posts do work.)

    • This appears to have been a side effect of some code I was testing relating to notifications, which shouldn’t have had anything to do with viewing posts.

      Since it’s WordPress, it apparently hosed the link to posts with no error message anywhere I could see.

      I have backed out the code and will try to figure out what is going on, hopefully without further disturbances, later today.

    I am having trouble uploading photos from my iPhone to the site. I get the screens for the normal upload in comments/post but when I “click” the “Select File” nothing happens.

    • See today’s Updates group post. Try uploading to media library from admin bar and then selecting from there.

    • Which browser were you using? In my testing on an iPad, Safari fails (but the work-around of choosing Add Media from the admin bar at the top and then selecting the “browser uploader” works), but Chome works fine.

      I am trying to run this down, but I need to know precisely which browser is failing.

    • I was using Brave. I was able to find the work around but use the header “+” to get to Add Media.

    I put up a post “Ali on Rush” with no problems.
    But it is labeled “uncategorized” because I did not see the categories window that is usually on the right sidebar.

    • I have no idea why you didn’t see the Categories box. I just opened a new post composition window and it was right where it’s supposed to be. I edited your post as administrator and added what seemed reasonable categories. Again, the categories box appeared normally on the post edit page. If you edit the post now, do you see the categories box?

    Something interesting. I did not log in, I was not logged in, I opened Firefox and went to the post I made about the blended wing. DrLorentz made a comment and (without logging in) I clicked on the “Like” button. I briefly saw the normal green background pop-up.
    I thought did I really see that? I then logged in and went to do the “Like” button on his comment. It was “Liked” but with no user icon. I “Liked” his reply and the count went up to +2 with only ONE user icon.

    • The WP-ULike plug-in that we use to handle likes does not require a user to be logged in to like or unlike something. If a non-logged-in user likes something, it increments the count but does not add an icon (because it doesn’t who the person is). This is in the spirit of standard WordPress, which allows people to comment without being logged in. We have local modifications that block most mischief that might be done by non-logged-in people, but WP-ULike was one I didn’t think of (and wasn’t aware existed).     • After further investigation, this turns out to have been the consequence of a configuration setting which was lost when the WP ULike version 4.1.3 “update” was installed on 2020-01-27. That version revamped the administration pages and, of course, lost all settings and customisation made in earlier versions. One of the things lost was the setting to restrict likes and unlikes only to logged-in users. I restored this setting, and it should now behave correctly. Full details will be in the Updates Group post at midnight.

    I can’t see notifications from groups if I have more than 20 items in my notification list without going to a separate page.

    • This doesn’t make any sense. Pagination of notifications is 25 per page, not 20. The order in which notifications appear on the pages is a function of BuddyPress and WP ULike and has not changed since they were installed in December, 2017.

    • This is another mystery to defuddle. Yes, what appeared to happen is that the user de-selected TinyMCE comment field (it was unchecked when I edited the post as Administrator). I have no idea why that was done. But that is not supposed to close comments on the post, just disable the fancy TinyMCE editor for comments, as opposed to idiot built-in WordPress comment editor.

      However, unchecking that box and saving the post marked the post closed for comments. Checking the box and updating the post does not re-enable comments, even though the box now shows as checked. Neither does…[Read more]

    I am getting “Error 500” a lot.
    I tried a restart. I switched from Chrome to Brave.
    Still crashing.
    No difficulties on other sites.

    • Now taking only 10 seconds or so to load. Was brutal late morning and early afternoon. Occasionally would time out before the menu bar could load

    • There is some kind of bizarre out of memory problem that I haven’t seen before. It appears to have started at 19:23:40 UTC. I am investigating it now.

    • From the investigation so far, it appears we are hitting the internal (self-enforced) limit on memory allocation for PHP-FPM worker processes. We last ran into this on 2019-07-24, when I increased the default maximum allocation from 128 Mb to 256 Mb. The messages in the log appear to indicate we are now hitting that limit, which causes 500 errors. (I don’t know if it can cause slow response.)

      I increased the maximum to 512 Mb. Since I did this, I haven’t seen a 500 error (but that’s just a few minutes so far). We’ll see.

    • This appears to be a combination of increased load on the site running into a memory limit configured in the server and/or an attack consuming resources which ran into the limit. A summary is on tonight’s Updates Group post:

      As I note, I lack the tools to identify the cause of these perturbations, so at the moment, I’m mostly trying things to see what happens. Please let me know if you perceive the problems to have abated or, sadly, stayed the same or gotten worse.

    Ratburger.org keeps crashing. I think it is just repeatedly timing out, on account of AT&T lies about my level of service. It is Friday night and every account is either streaming a movie or playing a MMG, so our little copper hub is choked.

    Unless you see something special, assume the problem is on my end. But it is frustrating.

    • I don’t see anything in the system status, access_log, or other indicators which indicates an attack in progress on the site, and I haven’t seen any slow response myself, as I’ve been editing and publishing a post over the last hour. My guess is that it’s just one of those slowdowns which happens on the Internet based on congestion of a point-to-point link, but not at the server end.

    • I’m sure you’re doing your own troubleshooting, but just as an additional data point — I have seen no slowdown.

    • The site was subjected to an intense log-in storm / denial of service attack (by far the worst in its history) between 2020-01-05 at 23:44:09 and 2020-01-06 at 10:16:27 when I figured out what was going on and firewalled the site in Germany responsible for the attack. During the attack, it was using up around half of the server CPU resources and PHP-FPM worker processes, and could have resulted in slow performance for accesses during that time.

    I had set my Beaver Swamp post for delayed publishing at 10:39 this morning. What did I do wrong?

    • The post is published, on the main page, and if I view its metadata in the administration page, it shows:

      Published on: Jan 4, 2020 at 10:39

      which looks correct. Did you manually publish it after it failed to appear? If not, everything looks OK. I have never tried a scheduled post, so it’s entirely possible something may be wrong with it, but I don’t see anything wrong with this one.

    • I set my post today, “Douglas Casey’s Predictions for the 2020s”, scheduled to be published at 15:30 UTC around 20 minutes earlier. The post was published on schedule at the appointed time.

    Is it me or Firefox? This is the third time I had noticed this. Someone posts a new post, coincidentally I am online and I wish to comment on this post. There is no (quote) to copy part of the text someone posted unless I refresh or go back to HOME and then go into the post a second time. I can “Like” it, but not quote it.
    Is there a timer engaged to make sure the post is actually finished before someone can “quote” it? Or is there a bug?

    • Are you sure you aren’t trying to quote a post when viewing the extract on the main page, rather than the page showing the full post after you’ve clicked the title? The Quote link only appears when the full post is displayed since there’s no comment composition box on the main page into which to paste the highlighted text. I find myself getting confused by that from time to time. If this is what’s happening, you don’t need to refresh the home page: just clicking the title of the post should display it along with a Quote link.

    Several times in the last few days, my notification counter has spontaneously reset to zero.

    • I haven’t seen anything like that. One question: when the counter (I assume you mean the number in the blue circle at the top right of the header bar) goes to zero, if you then go to view Unread Notifications (from, for example, Main Menu/Activity/Notifications), do you see unread notifications, or have they been cleared also?

      What I’m trying to figure out is whether the problem is with displaying the number of unread notifications or whether somehow outstanding unread notifications are getting cleared (marked Read), in which case you should see them if you click the Read tab on the…[Read more]

      The intriguing thing here is that it also occurred early this morning when I was only using my iphone to access. Then it occurred just before my post when I had only been using the PC. User error in two different situations seems unlikely, even for me.

    • Well then, perhaps the problem is me. I can see the photos and videos in the original post and in comments above. But in the referenced comment by Ms. EThompson, all I see is a very small thumbnail symbol. If I click on it, I get a larger box with the little symbol in the corner.
      I left the page up for fifteen minutes, in case my problem was slow internet again, but that is not the problem; other pages load fine.
