I was able to read the first three books in the series for free using the ‘Kindle Owners’ Lending Library’. Alas, Amazon is doing away with that and substituting ‘Prime Reading’, where a (I suspect a very carefully chosen and designed to be manipulative) selection of books may be read for free. I am prepared for the likelihood I will find less desirable choices going forward.

Hypatia – I am reading “The Evening and the Morning” by Ken Follett. Zero sciencey. It is a prequel to “Pillars of the Earth, set in the period from 997 – 1007 in fictional southern England. Although I have enjoyed all Follett’s novels (I have not read all of them, but have real “Pillars” and its sequels)I think the text in this one is dumbed down compared to others. It is still a good story for diversion – lots of twists, entertaining with credible characters. Some of them are chillingly evil.

Sounds like what used to happen here in pursuit of the American dream. No longer.

Review: Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard

When I was a kid growing up in northern NJ in the mid ’50’s, I was sent to summer camp in the Berkshire Mountains in western MA. I went there for three summer stints of 8 weeks each, at ages 10, 11 and 12. Leaving home early each summer on a long train ride beginning at Grand Central Station in NYC was tearful with pangs of what would now be called ‘separation anxiety’. Back then, Camp Monterey was near wilderness, the only sign of recognizable civilization being a Friendly’s ice cream p…[Read more]

    • There’s a lot about Garfield in Sarah Vowell’s book “Assassination Vacation” (2005). ISBN 0743260031
I really like her books even though she is kinda a lefty. These days we’re heating a lot about Lafayette Park, a public area beside the White House set aside for protesters—that reminded me of another great book of hers”Lafayette in the Somewhat United States” ISBN 1594631743 (2015). She’s very funny, and in her history books she isn’t polemical about her politics.

The “delete all notifications” bug is fixed! Thank you!

    • I have done nothing to the code which should have affected notifications since installing the BuddyPress 3.2.0 update on 2018-09-15. The odds are, whatever was causing the problems you were experiencing (which I didn’t see) is now simply hiding and will manifest itself again some time in the future.

Sorry, initially, I couldn’t figure out how to reply directly, so I put my answer to John’s questions in a new bug report. After I click on “Marl all notifications read,” I get to the next page. There, when I click on “delete all read notifications” either nothing happens or I get the spinning beachball. (It remains a long time. I haven’t waited more than a minute to see if it times out). Thanks.

When I click on “delete all read notifications” either nothing happens or I get the beach ball immediately. When this happens, the dialog box asking yes/no delete never appears.

For the past week or so, intermittently, when I click “mark all notifications as read,” and go to “delete all marked as read,” I either the latter link does not work or I get Mac’s spinning beachball of death. FYI.

    • I know how frustrating a “cannot reproduce”response is, but I use this function frequently on both desktop (Ubuntu/Chromium) and mobile (Android/Chome) platforms and have never seen this problem.

When you say “the latter link does not work”, what happens when you click it? Does it do nothing, or something else which does not delete the posts? When you click it, do you get the confirmation message about deleting the posts? When you get the beach ball, is this before or after the confirmation message?

    • I have not mention this but when I go to save a post, the interface hangs. At that time I open the site in another tab and in that tab complete what I am doing. I don’t know why the system hangs at times. I just know it doesn’t want to complete the task in a timely fashion.
