gone on sabbatical, prolly’ won’t be back, been snubbed, insulted, ignored, looked down upon, maybe because I made a living with my hands, just not a happy camper on here anymore. I could throw insults back, but they would be deleted by the admin.

    For John…
Something interesting. I did not log in, I was not logged in, I opened Firefox and went to the post I made about the blended wing. DrLorentz made a comment and (without logging in) I clicked on the “Like” button. I briefly saw the normal green background pop-up.
I thought did I really see that? I then logged in and went to do the “Like” button on his comment. It was “Liked” but with no user icon. I “Liked” his reply and the count went up to +2 with only ONE user icon.
Am I missing something here? Why only one user icon? Did the system really accept the “Like” when I was…[Read more]

    • The WP-ULike plug-in that we use to handle likes does not require a user to be logged in to like or unlike something. If a non-logged-in user likes something, it increments the count but does not add an icon (because it doesn’t who the person is). This is in the spirit of standard WordPress, which allows people to comment without being logged in. We have local modifications that block most mischief that might be done by non-logged-in people, but WP-ULike was one I didn’t think of (and wasn’t aware existed). I’ll look into blocking anonymous likes/unlikes when I apply the next…[Read more]

    • After further investigation, this turns out to have been the consequence of a configuration setting which was lost when the WP ULike version 4.1.3 “update” was installed on 2020-01-27. That version revamped the administration pages and, of course, lost all settings and customisation made in earlier versions. One of the things lost was the setting to restrict likes and unlikes only to logged-in users. I restored this setting, and it should now behave correctly. Full details will be in the Updates Group post at midnight.

It did not seem that way to me, It seemed that the posts did not have any comments yet and that happened, but I will pay much more attention to that detail. .

Is it me or Firefox? This is the third time I had noticed this. Someone posts a new post, coincidentally I am online and I wish to comment on this post. There is no (quote) to copy part of the text someone posted unless I refresh or go back to HOME and then go into the post a second time. I can “Like” it, but not quote it.
Is there a timer engaged to make sure the post is actually finished before someone can “quote” it? Or is there a bug?

    • Are you sure you aren’t trying to quote a post when viewing the extract on the main page, rather than the page showing the full post after you’ve clicked the title? The Quote link only appears when the full post is displayed since there’s no comment composition box on the main page into which to paste the highlighted text. I find myself getting confused by that from time to time. If this is what’s happening, you don’t need to refresh the home page: just clicking the title of the post should display it along with a Quote link.

A post is never displayed until the author hits…[Read more]

The other day we had severe winds and at about 2:00 A.M. we lost electrical power. The power did not return until a little bit after 2:00 P.M. the next day!
If I had purchased new batteries for my hacked UPS, (I used two automobile batteries), I could have had some power. But I didn’t.
So, in anticipation of a winter or summer blackout, I ordered a generator. It’s advertised output would be about 3600-Running-Watts. That’s in the area of 30 Amps at 240 volts. That will be enough for everything but the electric stove. It arrives on April 25.…[Read more]

Well, my hernia operation, the second one, seems to have went well, I should return to work in another week or so. I had signed up for Social Security Retirement benefits and they have started. Not much, after Medicare Part B is paid, it should be a little over a C-note.
